This can not only be dangerous, but it affects your ability to skate your best. You should always be aware of what deck size is perfectly suited for your skating style and size. The common deck width is around 8 inches and is perfectly suited for skaters who like to do such tricks as flips and grinds. The length of the average desk is usually between 32-34 inches. While the length isn't usually a big factor for most skateboarders, the width usually is.

Depending on your size and weight, you may want a narrow board or wide board. A general rule is that the bigger you are, the wider your deck should be. Of course this can be a personal preference, but I wouldn't recommend that any big guys use a narrow deck for safety reasons.

The best decks are made out of Canadian maple wood, but you can also buy high quality decks in other woods and materials such as kevlar and carbon fibers. Many decks made out of composite material are generally lighter than their wood counterparts. Basically, you want to make sure your deck is made out of a good and durable wood that will last and won't crack easily.

You also must take into account the nose of the board as well. Generally the more curve a nose has, the easier it will be to do tricks on. If you are more into street cruising, then a flat nose will be more than suitable.

Skateboard decks come in a variety of shapes and sizes and selecting the perfect one can be a confusing process. However, by using some of the tips I detailed above, it will make buying a great deck extremely simple.
