Cypress Decks

Often overlooked, cypress is hard to beat as a decking material. Cypress is rot resistant. It has been used in boat building for hundreds of years. It is more stable than pine, which seems to be the popular choice for those on a tight budget. It is much more cost efficient than any type of composite decking.

Cypress is an American product. It is sustainable. It is carbon neutral for those who are concerned with the Green aspect. On the other hand, the composites are made in part of petroleum products.

No decking material is maintenance free. Long touted as being such, these days, after many problems with their product, even the composite manufacturers no longer claim that their product is maintenance free. Most people think a deck should look as natural as possible. Especially when it is incorporated into their landscaping as part of the whole picture. Cypress fills that need very nicely.

Even pressure treated cypress should be further treated with a penetrating sealer. It can be stained to match or contrast a house's color scheme and then sealed with a clear penetrating sealer. Try that with a composite! It is recommended that cypress should not be painted when used on a horizontal surface.

Cypress is very cost efficient when compared with composites. The leading brand of composite decking cost as much as three times more than cypress per linear foot, perhaps depending on how far it is shipped. Other popular options for decking include cedar and redwood. Both are considerably more expensive.

Composite Decking: A Wise Choice For Your New Deck

Today more and more homeowners pick composite as the material of choice for their new deck or deck renovation project. If you are planning to refurbish an existing deck made from lumber, it is high time you choose a more environment friendly and low maintenance material. What is composite decking? This is actually a combination of plastic and wood fiber which is used to create planks. The end product of these combined materials offers low maintenance with longer life span compared with wood decking.

If you want a family friendly deck material which is safe for kid's bare feet, composite should be your choice. Splintering is often not a problem with composite decking. This is because of the smooth surface each plank offers. A lot of composites used in decks are made from recycled materials. This is especially important considering the growing concern to save mother earth.

The harsh and changeable weather are challenges which many homeowners face specifically when it comes to keeping the integrity of their home's outdoor structures including decks. However, with composite decking you can expect longer lifespan, better resistance against the elements of nature, and lower maintenance cost. Unlike wood decking, this only requires occasional cleaning therefore saving you time, money, and energy.

There are two types of composite decking to choose from. These are the hollow and solid composites. If you want the feel and look of real wood, you might want to opt for the solid type. Because of the greater mass which comes with solid decking, expect to see several contraction and expansion of the product whenever there are changes in temperature. The other type looks more like man-made. Unlike solid decking the hollow type doesn't react much to temperature changes because of the less amount of mass in every plank. Because hollow decking is less dense you will encounter greater chances of damage during installation. That is why extra care should be given when installing hollow type of decking.

All types of composite decking require treatment. Although this type of decking is a combination of wood fibers and plastic, decaying is still inevitable if no treatment is provided. Preservatives and anti-fungal chemical are used to minimize the rotting of materials. Moisture causes the acceleration of the rotting process. Without treatment you can expect the rotting to speed up and can cause serious damage problems.

Finally, if you want the strength and beauty of wood plus the many advantages of plastic, consider using composite decking. With less maintenance and better resistance to common wood problems, this type of decking will provide you longer years of service at low cost.

Custom Decks For Your Home

A home is a haven far from heaven. And it will be best with an 'oasis'. This is why decks are being built in most homes. For your most preferred result of a beautiful home, you can have a customized one. This will embody your personality and your choices. The need to having it accentuated and fully designed depends on you but it is highly recommended.

If you are a person of the world, you definitely want a bigger and lavish type of deck. You can either add posh deck chairs, tables, and planters to match your feel of things. You can also add high chairs and party accessories to complete the scene. But if you are a person who just wants to stay by yourself, then there is no need for you to have a big deck. But in either circumstance, you have to customize your deck to ensure that you can display the real you.

Customizing your deck though, must not compromise the real purpose of your deck and its railings. It must be beautiful and functional for your satisfaction. Also, it needs to adhere with the building code that is being implemented in your place. So even if you want something totally unique, you still need to ensure that it will not be making any bad effects to your neighbors or the entire community.

It is recommended that even if it is 'cool' to be unique, you have to ensure that your customized decks will have materials that are easy to find and available in your place. By doing so, you can economize and save a lot in effort and time. Some of the important pointers for you to keep in mind are the following:

Composite. A good customized deck material is composites. These are basically wood-polymer lumber being manufactured to come up with the combination of a natural wood and a polymer/plastic. Some of the most common composite ingredients are waste wood fiber and reclaimed plastics such as stretch films, and grocery sacks. These materials also provide different benefits like chemical and pest resistance, low absorption of moisture, UV protection, and increased stiffness.

Natural. Materials for deck railing, even if it is going to be customized, must also be natural. Some of the best materials for this type are cedar and redwood. These natural materials are very easy to find because they grow in many areas. This only ensures that when and where you need these wood materials will be provided without the hassles. Also, they are very durable and less expensive than those that are very foreign and difficult to acquire materials. Cedar is also retains its scent very well so there is no need for you to find ways in having natural feel in your deck. These natural materials are more than enough.

Composite Deck Maintenance - The Real Benefits Of A Composite Material

A backyard deck is a component of the home that is a real asset that one can hardly do without after having one for a while. The uses a person can get from them far out way the cost or the regular scheduled work required to maintain them.

We all know how much fun we can have on a deck, but a lot of people don't realize that it doesn't end there. The added value in equity you get from a deck far out ways the funds needed to build it, but as a homeowner that has a deck I can tell you the value is much greater than a monetary one. The added space that you can utilize for a gathering spot as well as entertain is unbeatable.

Keep in mind that any space that is open to the elements will need regular care or it will be gone before you know it. Don't let that scare you because deck maintenance is not a really big ordeal if you do it on a regular basis.

You also need to know that not all decking material will require the same amount of attention. Wooden decks for example will need more love than a deck made of a composite material. Composite decks are not affected by the damaging rays of the sun; therefore they will not crack or turn gray due to it. So in turn your maintenance is much lower compared to wood.

But as it goes they are still in need of a regular cleaning that will keep them looking sharp. Forgetting to clean a composite deck for a couple of years will not harm it, but it does look a lot better when you do. The main issue that I've seen with these types of decks is the leaves and other organic matter that sticks in between the boards starts to grow mould.

The easiest way to dispose of it is to use a narrow metal object to work it lose and wash it free with a regular garden hose. Or you can rent a power washer and just blast it out just as easily. They work really great on composite decks unlike wood decks that can get damaged by the high pressure.

Just remember that the labour involved in a well-maintained deck can save you a lot of money in the long run and give you space to enjoy for a lifetime.

Choose Trex Decking - The Last Material For Your Deck

Trex decking is one of the composite decking materials that has a proven track record with homeowners. Trex is different from other alternative materials for use as decking because it has a higher percentage of wood in its components. It is also very environmentally friendly and is completely recyclable. Although Trex decking does contain wood, it does not require the same level of maintenance as wood decking does.

Trex decking prices may turn you off when you first look at the price tag associated with it. However, when you compare Trex decking to using wood as decking material, you have to look at the other important features of Trex composite decking. With wood, you have to paint and stain it just about every year. It is subject to rot and insect infestation. You do not have any of these problems with Trex decking and it will last a lifetime. Compare the prices of what it will cost you to keep your wood deck in good shape and you will see that Trex offers the best bargain in decking.

Some of the other impressive features of Trex decking include:

· It doesn't crack

· It doesn't splinter

· It is slip-resistant

· It will not swell when exposed to moisture

· It has minimal shrinkage in cold temperatures

You can saw and fasten the Trex composite decking to the wooden frame of the deck just as you can with wood or another brand of composite decking. It has UV protection so that it won't fade from the glare of the sun on the hot summer days. Even though you pay the higher Trex decking prices, you will notice some light fading in the first few months. This is the natural process of the composite decking acclimatizing to the location.

Trex composite decking means that the material is made from plastic and reclaimed wood. The wood can be fiber or sawdust and often the plastic is recycled as well. Each plank or tile that you have has the color going all the way through. When you purchase an installation kit to help you out, you will also get the instructions as to how to create a beautiful deck with Trex decking. You can also visit the company website and download the instruction. The cost of the installation kit is in addition to the Trex decking prices so you do have to allow for this in your budget.

It is best to buy all of the Trex decking that you need at the same time. This is because if you run out of the Trex composite decking and have to return to the store for more, the next shipment may not be exactly the same color. At various times, you may be able to get the Trex decking on sale and when you have to buy some at a later date, you will have to pay higher Trex decking prices.

Deck Building - Things to Consider Before Building a Deck

There may be several reasons for you to build a deck, the foremost being that you'll be able to expand your living space and create a place for you and your family to enjoy during fine weather conditions. However, at the same time, you should also consider carefully all the reasons for desiring to build a deck i.e. what functions it will serve for you and most importantly its purpose. Doing this will allow you to properly plan and design a deck that is not only inviting but also functional!

Even for all the do-it-yourself guys, constructing a deck is not very easy which they can tackle quite comfortably. For the rest of you, there are a number of deck building contractors to do the job to perfection.

The very first step in planning a deck is to work out where to build it. For this you need to consider the size, the shape, the location and the neighboring landscape of the deck. Some of these features may be more important to you than the others, but you should always keep all of them in your mind when you plan, design and build a deck. Some additional factors to be considered are:

1. Access -Will you be building the deck in a convenient location? Is there proper access to and from the house to the deck? Is there an existing wall or a door that needs to be removed?

2. Direction -Which direction does your residence face? This is important because if you put your deck facing the sun, you might need to think how you will get shade from the sun's heat, otherwise your deck may simply be usable. In this case a good deck builder will suggest you to incorporate lattice barriers into your design. These offer shade from the sun and also give protection from cool winds.

3. Privacy -This is very important. You must make sure that your deck design offers you privacy from your neighbors.

4. Design -Your deck should look like an extension to your house. If you do not have the skills necessary for designing a deck that blends well with your house, you should think about hiring a professional deck builder. A deck building expert will assist you with planning the design of a deck, determining which materials need to be used and a rough cost estimate of your project.

5. Material -The most common deck building material is wood, like cedar and redwood, which can be either stained or sealed. You can also opt for recycled plastic materials in composite decks.

Once all of the above considerations are thought out, it is time call a deck builder and to begin your new deck project. Have fun on your new deck!

Your Guide to Hardwood Decking Varieties

There are so many kinds of hardwood decking out there, how do you pick the perfect type for your outdoors area? Here is your guide to the key hardwood decking types to help you choose...

Ipe Hardwood Decking

Ipe hardwood is also known as Brazilian hardwood. This type of decking has a lot of strings to its bow. Nature has done Ipe hardwood a lot of favours. Not only is it naturally insect and rot resistant, it is also very resistant to fire. The wood itself originates in South America and has a luxurious dark, olive complexion. In sunlight this colour will fade to a lighter, grayer tone over time. To preserve the original look you will need to apply an appropriate finish every year.

Since Ipe hardwood is up to five times denser than many other types of hardwood, it is much more durable and is comparatively long lasting. Unfortunately, as it is a natural material, it will not last forever and will require a certain amount of maintenance and care after installation.

Western Red Cedar Decking

Native to the UK, Western red cedar wood is a durable natural wood option which has the added benefit of being notably lightweight. This lightweight property makes red cedar hardwood easy to transport and install. On top of this, red cedar secretes its own natural oils which repel insects.

In appearance this form of hardwood decking starts life as a red-brown and gradually fades to a silver-grey tone.

Teak Decking

Teak is a popular form of decking as it has natural weather-resistant properties and does not require sealant. You'll find teak in garden furniture and boat decking for this very reason. Hailing from Indonesia, teak hardwood decking initially has a golden tone which, over time, becomes silver-grey.

Although it is highly weather resistant, it is not infallible. Over time your teak decking will require plenty of TLC and, because it is a natural material, it will not last forever.

Redwood Decking

Redwood is, confusingly, a lovely silvered wood which is comparatively rot-resistant. However, many decking experts will tell you that redwood decking looks better with sealant. It is less weather resistant in comparison to other hardwood decking types and, if subjected to long periods of dampness, it will blacken.

Composite Hardwood Decking

Composite hardwood decking is anything you want it to be! It is available in a wide range of styles, tones, colours and finishes which look as good (often better) than natural hardwood varieties. The best bit is that composite decking is carefully engineered to ensure that it is fully weather, rot and insect resistant. It requires the absolute minimum maintenance, just a quick hose down every year or so, and will stay looking perfect with very little effort.

The downside, of course, is price. Composite decking is more expensive but it will last for decades and will require next to no further investment in treatments, finishes and repairs.

Composite Decking FAQ

These are the most common questions that first-time users of composite decking have. If you're planning or are still considering using which composite decking materials to use, the information below will give you a pretty good idea on how to go about making your decision.

How long is the warranty of composite decking?

Composite decking usually lasts at least twenty years. This is the normal warranty for brands such as CorrectDeck. Sometimes the warranty is longer for different kinds of plants. For instance, planks used for the home may have longer warranty compared to that of the planks used on docks.

Can composite decking brands help in designing my deck?

Again, brands such as CorrectDeck have special programs and pieces of important information both from their stores and their website that will be able to help you design your composite-decking. If you really have no idea about what to choose, there's a team of designers from CorrectDeck that can give you advice on how to put you in the right direction and how to make your deck a perfect spot for you.

Can planks be painted or stained?

This is not usually recommended, since the finish of most of the composite decking materials already come in luscious colors and texture. But most of the brands available today can be painted or stained on if that's what you prefer.

Can I power wash the deck?

There are brands that don't recommend power washing the deck, but there are also those that swear that their planks won't be affected. For those brands that can be power washed though, there are specific instructions to follow to keep the texture and appearance of the planks always looking new. First, make sure that you are using a fan tip nozzle to avoid ruining the wood, and make sure to spray only in the same direction as the grain pattern.

Are composite decking materials affected by the heat of the sun?

While composite-decking materials get hot during the summer, they are already usually developed with pigments that prevent the planks from getting heat build-up. Almost all the planks used by different brands now have UV protected planks to keep your deck cool during the summer and prevent it from cracking because of heat.

Deck Material Comparison

There are many types of synthetic boards you may use for decking materials or you can choose wood materials that will last for many years. More durable woods like ipe can be oiled yearly to preserve the natural wood grain and stability. Consider the overall quality, wear, and durability of your deck choice.

Composite decks. Composite decking is an eco-friendly material, consisting of fusing plastics and wood into outdoor boards. Vinyl decking is composed of entirely plastic material and is less problematic concerning mildew growth. Trex escapes offers composite decking as, pre-weathered wood for decks and patios. Most composite decks will show signs of wear and tear such as scratches in the material and fading of original color.

You will have to spend more time maintaining the overall appearance of your deck and the boards will not stay in pristine condition forever. There have been a number of lawsuits in the past twenty years regarding faulty decking products. Be sure to research the company and warranty information before purchasing any composite decking. Most composite decking should be pressure washed with a mild soap and water treatment. You may use harsh chemicals for a more thorough cleaning, but be careful to spot treat instead of allowing chemicals to runoff into your landscape.

Ipe and other natural woods. Using natural wood allows the homeowner to have more consistency with the overall aging process and upkeep of the material. For example, the wood can be sanded, refinished, and oiled to be kept looking like new. The wear and tear look of natural wood isn't as visibly an eye sore compared with composite decking. Ipe wood has a greater durability and lower maintenance requirements. The USDA rated Ipe wood as being "very resistant to decay, attack of fungi and termites." Ipe changes to a nice light grey weathered look when left untreated in the sunlight. Over time the wood may show use of wear, but can be power washed to the original appearance. Ipe is an excellent wood that is rot and pest resistant.

Keep in mind how often you would like to maintain your decking material and overall visual appeal. You may make a different choice based upon longevity as well as maintenance. Contact your local landscape design and installation company for availability and pricing on outdoor deck materials.

Cedar Decking, Pine Decking Or Ipe Decking & Why

Decking is one of the most popular home improvements a homeowner can make and 85% of homeowners on average will actually add one or more in the lifetime of their purchase. The deck boards are a very important part of the decision making process for this project with many choices now available. In the past the choice had predominately been pressure treated pine but now with new technology the choices are abundant. Let's take a look at several wood decks and the reasons for and against them.

Pine has been a popular choice for many reasons. Readily available, this wood is pressure treated to ensure insect control and resistance to decay. Earth friendly properties of this wood include the fact it produces less energy and air/water pollution than other building materials. Pine is four times stronger than plastic and is fairly easy to install with no special tools required. Southern pine is comfortable under foot when the sun is out compared to the blistering temperature of many composite or artificial decks. The drawbacks of course are the chemical outgas and replacement of this deck is usually 10-15 years if annually maintained.

Cedar has gained popularity due to its density and rich warm tones. This decking requires no chemical treatment for insect resistance. The price is about twice that of pressure treated lumber and also widely used. This deck requires stainless steel screws but no predrilling. Lifetime is about 9-20 years with regular maintenance, must purchase clear grade. The wood properties are equally earth friendly as the pine decks. You can span more board in cedar than you can in a composite deck board due to strength. The downfall is it may still be too soft for outdoor application and the clear grade is very pricey to purchase.

Ipe has a growing demand mainly due to it's strength, it has a janka hardness of 3680 compared to Cedar at 350. This gives you an idea of just how hard this exotic hardwood is. Ipe also known as Ironwood is originally from South America, Central America and parts of the Caribbean. This hardwood has been used in many commercial applications such as the boardwalk in Miami for its resiliency and longevity. Naturally resistant to insects, mold, fungus and decay, Ipe also has a fire spread rating same as concrete. Lifetime of this material is over 40 years with no treatment. If you apply a UV inhibitor to this deck you can get over 100 year life expectancy. This deck will require very little maintenance and you and your future generations can actually enjoy more time entertaining and relaxing and less time maintaining your deck area. This wood product provides all the same benefits as above plus more. The cost is also more than pressure treated lumber and this board does have to be predrilled due to the density of the board but the longevity will more than make up for the initial labor as you will not have to remove and reinstall a new deck in 10 -15 years.

Building a Deck - DIY Or Pro?

Once defined by a house with a picket fence, the American Dream has expanded to reflect the nation's growing passion for outdoor living spaces. These days, homeowners are increasingly yearning for comfortable, inviting decks, the latest hallmark of "the good life." And for good reason: A well-planned deck can easily become the most alluring room in the house.

Building a deck can be an expensive undertaking, however, which is why many homeowners are considering the do-it-yourself option. With deck manufacturers and retailers selling DIY cedar and composite deck packages, building your own deck is more accessible than ever. Still, it can be an intimidating project, especially for those with only the most basic construction skills.

So how do you know whether you should tackle your own deck project or let the pros handle it? Here's a guide to help you decide.

Making Tradeoffs

By taking care of the installation yourself, you can shave up to a third of the cost off the price of your deck. In effect, however, you will be substituting that portion of the cost with your own time and labor. The most important decision when choosing between a DIY or pro install is whether that tradeoff is worth it to you. Ask yourself these questions:

Are you in a hurry? There's no getting around the fact that a professional deck builder can install your deck faster and better than you can. If want your deck built quickly, it's best the let the pros handle the job. However, if you don't mind taking a month of weekends to complete your project, then DIY is a possibility.

Do you have the drive? Building a deck takes time, sweat and hard work. Depending on your skill level, you might also be taking on a lot of frustration and extra time spent learning and making mistakes. Your burning desire to finish your deck is what will pull you through.

Does your deck have to be perfect? If you've never built a deck before, chances are you won't do everything perfectly the first time around. However, many do-it-yourselfers take enough pride in building their own projects that they don't mind if the end result has a few blemishes. If it's important to you that your deck looks, well, professional, then you might want to put it in the hands of the experts.

Keeping It Simple

A basic deck is fairly straightforward to build. It consists of a simple wood frame topped with the decking material of your choice. With some research and adequate planning, you can build a basic, freestanding deck design with only rudimentary construction skills. The key is to gather as much information and advice from professionals as you can. That means not only finding out what materials you'll need, but also researching building codes, locating utility lines and understanding basic deck terminology so you can ask the right questions.

Some deck design questions to consider, if you're thinking about going the DIY route:

How high does your deck need to be? A low-standing cedar deck is simpler to build, whereas the higher you go the more complex your project becomes. With a raised deck, more safety concerns come into play. A strong, stable foundation is essential to preventing deck collapse, and a higher deck will require stairs and handrails, which will complicate your project.

Do you want your deck attached to the house? Attaching the deck to your home requires removing siding and installing a ledger board to support your deck. Alternatively, a freestanding or "floating" deck can still be placed adjacent to your home but will be self-supporting, with footings at all four corners. you'll need to build extra footings, but you won't have to worry about messing up your house itself.

What type of footings will you use? Your local building codes will determine the number and types of footings you will need based on your deck design. A low-standing deck may only require concrete pier blocks (which you can buy pre-cast) that rest on compact soil. A taller deck will require you to pour concrete footings that extend below the frost line, usually about two feet deep. Your posts can be set directly into the concrete, or you can set metal anchors into the concrete for attaching the posts.

Partial DIY

Some retailers offer deck packages with partial installation. This means the structural framing will be installed by professionals, leaving you to attach the remaining deck boards. Leading installers will provide complete plans and instructions to help you complete the project. This allows you to take responsibility for the aesthetics of your deck without having to worry about the engineering concerns involved with making your deck structurally sound.

Taking on a composite or cedar deck building project requires a lot of planning and thought, but it can be done, even if your construction skills are basic at best.

Composite Decking Maintenance Tips

Composite decks are an attractive choice because they are relatively easy to maintain. Unlike traditional wood decks, composite decks don't require paint or sealer, and they don't produce splinters. But there is still some maintenance required to keep even this decking material looking its best. Follow the tips below to keep the floor of your outdoor room in tip-top shape.

1. Use Caution with Your Grill. If you're going to be grilling on your deck, put a guard mat under the grill. Not only can the feet of the grill cause scrapes and scratches, but hot coals and grease can potentially ruin composite decking. A flame-resistant guard mat will help protect decking from burns and stains.

2. Arrange Proper Ventilation. Make sure the boards of your deck are adequately spaced for ventilation. This is key for discouraging mold and mildew growth in decking.

3. Ensure Good Drainage. Make sure standing water doesn't accumulate under your deck. Mold and mildew aren't the only things that thrive in standing water; it can attract insects and other pests, and can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Be sure to have a good drainage system under your decking, and make sure splash guards and downspouts are directed away from your deck, toward another area of your yard.

4. Be Careful with Tools and Other Hard, Sharp Objects. Composite decking material may be tough, but it can still be scratched by the point of a shovel or another hard object being carelessly dropped or dragged across its surface. You certainly don't want to remove the snow to reveal a scratched and damaged deck. Patio furniture is another common culprit of scratching--when dragged across nearly any surface, patio furniture can leave marks. Avoid dragging anything along the surface of your deck.

5. Keep It Clean. A good cleaning regimen for your deck should include clearing all materials off the deck at least once a month, and then hosing down the entire surface. Before using any commercial cleaning product, test it on a small portion so as to be sure it won't cause stains. If a spill does occur, clean it up as soon as possible. The longer that any liquid sits, the deeper it is likely to seep into the wood fibers of your composite decking.

Mold and mildew can attack both the wood and the plastic in composite decking material. These organisms are two of the biggest threats to a composite deck's appearance, so be sure to keep your deck free of them.

If you feel you must use a power washer to clean your deck's surface, be extremely careful, and use lower amounts of pressure. (Ideally, you will keep your deck's surface clean all year-round, so there will be no need to clean with a power washer.) Keep harsh chemicals, such as paint thinner and bleach, away from your composite deck. Finally, if you do discover a stain, manufacturers recommend that you do not try to remove it with sanding. Instead, call your composite decking provider to learn what they recommend for product-specific stain removal.

Finding the Right Deck Railing Ideas for You

There are a lot of things to consider when you are looking for ideas for your deck railings. The most important factor, of course, if the style of your home. The idea behind a deck is to bring your living area out into the garden area, and you already have an idea about how you want this to look. There are many quality materials available for deck railings, so there will surely be a style that suits your home and your imagination.

A deck is a good investment for your home and you want it to last. Using composite decking and railing materials rather than synthetics will help your deck last longer. Iron railings are very attractive, but proper care is required. If an iron railing is not cared for properly by being protected by a paint or varnish, it will corrode and rust. This will happen even more quickly in an area that is damp or humid, since moisture causes the corrosion.

Wooden railings are preferable for many people rather than some other traditional materials such as brick, stone or metal. One of the main reasons that wood railings are preferable is that they are easy to install in a fairly short time. There are people who prefer the look and quality of iron railings, but they should think about the challenges that caring for iron railings present.

Of all the wood materials available for railings, one of the best is cedar. Cedar is attractive and easy to maintain. If you have cedar railings on your outdoor deck, lovely cedar outdoor furniture would fit right in. Cedar furniture is very practical because it is long lasting and easy to maintain. Lightweight cedar furniture can be moved around on the deck easily and provide a beautiful contrast to most decking materials. Finding the right combination of materials is up to you.

You can install your own deck railings, if you have the right materials. You have to buy the posts, balusters, top rail and finials for your rails. Then you need the right tools and finishing materials, such as a saw, a drill, measuring tape, finishing nails. No matter which style railings you have chosen, such as traditional, contemporary or Victorian, you will find all of the materials you need at your local home improvement store or lumberyard.

DIY Deck Tools Guide

Starting any decking project can seem overwhelming at first. Attempting to decide what kind of deck to build can be a challenge in itself. Once that decision has been made, the real fun begins. There are choices between deck fasteners and choices between the many different types of screws and nails. There are choices in how and what type of sealer to use and choices in the gap spacing that is required or desired. This article will help to guide you in the many tools that are available to help make your deck building project easier and faster.

Let's start with the many types of nails and screws on the market. How do you determine which is best? It's been proven time and time again that screws will hold tighter and longer than nails, making screws the obvious choice. Always choose a high grade stainless steel screw, especially when installing high end decking materials. Anything less could cause corrosion and stain the area around the screw. Pardon the pun, but, when it comes to the look of your deck, why would you want to screw that up?

Along with the screws, I would recommend a cordless screw gun with an adjustable clutch. An adjustable clutch can save you many tips and screws as it insures you do not over torque the screws during installation.

If installing hardwood decking, I also recommend pre-drilling a pilot hole for your stainless steel screws with a high speed drill bit. This works to your advantage in two ways; It will keep your screws from breaking as they are screwed into the extremely dense hardwood, and it will help to keep your hardwood from splintering in the future when movement is all but guaranteed.

There are many brands of deck fasteners on the market today, but only a few will really hold up. Some deck fasteners require extra tools making installation more complicated than it has to be. Keep it simple. You want to look for a fastener made of quality material; one that will hold the densest of hardwoods. To achieve this strength and for ease of use, I prefer an edge mount system with a stainless steel insert.

Some deck fasteners designed today can be used on either hardwood or composite decking making them quite versatile. These fasteners can be secured and attached by placing a screw right through the fastener and straight down into the joist, which allows composite decking to naturally move on its length. These same fasteners can also be secured and attached by placing a screw at a 45 degree angle through your hardwood and then into the joist, allowing hardwoods to move on its width all the while keeping uniform gap spacing.

There is also help on the market when it comes to straightening warped or bowed deck boards. Board straightening tools do exactly what the name implies. Nothing can be more irritating than attempting to place your next deck board down and realizing that it is bowed beyond use. There are tools that will slip over your joist and by the simple and easy pull of a handle, straighten that board so that it can be more easily secured. One tool was made available just last year that cam locks into place, holding the board for you, giving you a hands free opportunity to work on your deck without any assistance. This tool alone will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Whether you are a first time deck builder or the seasoned professional, there are deck tools available to make any job easier and less time consuming. Following these helpful tips, you too will soon realize installing a hardwood or composite deck does not have to be so frustrating.

Tongue and Groove Decking for Porches

Your porch is one of the first things everyone sees as they approach your front door. What kind of impression do you want to make? If one of your home improvement goals is to renovate your front porch, you need to know the best materials to use. After all, your porch is one of the easiest and fastest ways to decorate, update, revitalize, and repair your home.

Wood porch flooring options is the most popular material for porch floors. You can choose any species from domestic Walnut to exotic Cumaru. There is a wood floor to fit any budget and/or design. Often, exotic species such as Tigerwood or Ipe are more resistant to mold, mildew, and domestic pests than domestic species like Maple or Ash.

What do most professionals recommend? Ipe wood is believed to be the best wood for exterior use. Colors can range from olive brown, to brown-black, and sometimes striping of lighter colors throughout. It is very strong and dense, has high durability, and is resistant to splintering, warping, or cracking. Its natural oils help the wood to resist decay, insects, and mold, which leaves this wood chemical free. In addition, the wood has a class A fire rating for flame spread, which increases the fire safety of your home.

Tigerwood is, in my opinion, the most beautiful, and can be used for both interior and exterior use. Many high end homes use Tigerwood to create a smooth transition between their outdoor porch and their indoor living area. The color of Tigerwood can vary from a dark red to a red-brown and is known to have black and brown stripes. Tigerwood, like Ipe, also contains natural oils to help resist mold, mildew, and insects. In addition, its density and strength stands up to even the toughest of foot traffic.

Mahogany is just also very strong and dense, but not nearly as strong as Ipe. Its strength is comparable to Tigerwood and teak. It has the least amount of knots compared to the other porch decking materials. Mahogany is a great wood porch option because it is very rot-resistant.

As for the best profile to use, many installers choose the tongue and groove profile for covered porches because it is easy to install and gives you a solid, seamless look. If you're looking to renovate, or build a porch on your own, then Tongue and Groove decking can be installed easily so you don't have to worry about an expensive professional installer.

What about porch decking made of plastic composite materials? Their track record is spotty at best. Why? Well, mostly because of spots. You can find composite deck porch owners sharing pictures and horror stories about constant maintenance and repairs due to splotchy mold, decay, and peeling. The hardwoods mentioned above don't have that problem.

Before you get stared building a deck porch, be sure to check your local building codes. They are in place to make sure your porch passes inspection and has a long life.

PVC Decking - Poisonous Volatile Compounds

PVC decking has been growing in popularity as companies are heavily marketing the perks but is it worth the gamble? Polyvinyl chloride commonly referred to as PVC is a manufactured plastic with toxic byproducts. Dioxin (potent carcinogen), ethylene dichloride and vinyl chloride are made in the production of PVC and causes health problems. Neurological damage, birth defects, impaired child development, endocrine disruption, endometriosis, immune system damage, reproductive damage and cancer are some of those problems.

PVC was labeled a contaminant in 1998 and efforts to recycle it were declared a failure by the Association of Post Consumer Plastics Recyclers. Did you know that PVC when exposed to fires release toxins long after it ignites and in landfills may be the largest source of dioxin releases in this environment. The dioxin is a persistent toxin that does not break down rapidly and migrates in the air via wind and in the water transporting itself in the fatty tissues of sea life. It has been discovered in dangerous concentrations in the tissues of whales, polar bears, fish and Inuit mother's breast milk. The lethal additives such as lead, cadmium and organotins used in PVC used to keep it from breaking down is known to cause cancer, lead poisoning and asthma.

At what cost are we willing to compromise our lifestyle? Are we willing to expose our children and friends to this material because we want supposedly less maintenance? All decking will require maintenance at some point and compromising your future well being and that of your planet is just not worth it. This material has long lasting damaging effects on human as well as other species not to mention the environment. We scream and yell about the dangers of mold and fungus in our drywalls and about the effects of pollutants in our waters but how about how PVC is taking over the construction of our homes.

Construction materials are 75% of what PVC is produced for, ranging from electrical wire insulation to shades and blinds to vinyl flooring to gutters. The true cost of this product has not been publicized until now. Fortunately, there is a wide range of alternatives that are cost effective and without the toxic effects of PVC.

Decking is made to be enjoyed and add value to your home. Please do not expose your family and outside environment to this toxic alternative. If you are looking for a low maintenance, chemical free and long lasting deck with a fire rating same as concrete than you have found it in Ipe.

Ipe decking has long been used in commercial and residential applications for a beautiful natural and durable deck. FSC certified Ipe is also available for the most discriminating client or LEED points projects and guarantees responsible forest practices. No other product can stand up to Ipe's strength (janka rating 3680), insect & mold/fungus resistance (no chemicals) and this product is totally renewable, recyclable and bio-degradable! If you are looking for low maintenance, than you have found your answer in this product.

Is Steel The Way To Go For Your Deck?

Trex Announces Acquisition of Iron Deck

Wooden decks have a long history in American culture. There's just something about the rich colors that different kinds of wood offer, and the feel of warm wood beneath your bare feet in the summer. However, wooden decks can sometimes cause worries and problems: termites, wood rot, and regular wear and tear with age. Perhaps it's time to start giving wooden decks a steel backbone!

I'm happy to announce that new steel options on the market are giving homeowners the chance to enjoy stronger, age-resistant, and more eco-friendly decks that can last up to 25 years. One of my most trusted suppliers, Trex Company, has announced the acquisition of Iron DeckR, a manufacturer of steel deck framing systems.

The result of this marriage is a new steel framing product called Trex Elevations?, which is meant to replaces the wooden substructure of a deck. A substructure is the hidden support system of a deck. It's what keeps the deck standing strong throughout the years of use. The Trex Elevations substructure can be hidden by an outer wood framing. In other words, customers get all the beauty of a wooden deck or composite decking with all the benefits of a strong, steel skeleton.

What are the benefits of steel? Trex Elevations will be manufactured from dual-coated, galvanized steel, which will help decks last longer by preventing common causes of deck destruction such as termites and wood rot. Unlike wood, steel does not warp, twist, split or decay. City build Departments will recognize the stronger more durable qualities of steel which will make for permitting ease. Trex is offering a 25-year limited warranty, far surpassing the usual 15-year warranty offered by pressure-treated wood.

Trex even adds an environmental incentive. Their steel product contains 25% recycled material, and scraps from the jobsite are 100% recyclable. The design process needed for steel will eliminate most of the waste also.

Using the new Trex product for a deck's substructure might not be the best choice in every circumstance, but it is certainly a very exciting development. As a contractor, I can now offer my customers additional attractive options for their deck. I like the idea of building more secure, longer-lasting decks and using materials that are a little better for the environment. I am sure customers will appreciate a more durable deck that will require less care and maintenance and more barbeques and outdoor parties.

The Truth About Building Decks

Most people get very excited at the idea of erecting their own decks as one of the do-it-yourself projects that sound so sweet to the ears but nobody ever gives any prior consideration to the flooring aspect of the decks.

The joy soon fizzles out when the DIY deck-builders get to realize that a lot more is needed for this kind of work. The lucky ones who are loaded with cash can easily get somebody else to take over and finish the project for them.

For those who are not so lucky and are short of cash, this is normally the time to count the true friends. Another alternative is just to keep toiling at it slowly, chip upon chip, and rock upon rock until you get to complete the work with time.

The flooring materials for building decks are very varied. They range from wood, vinyl, metal, plastics and a composite made of wood-plastic. The best, commonly preferred material is wood; it having been applied in deck building from time immemorial.

Wood is cheaper to use it but maintaining it is costly and so with time you end up spending more on it. The cost of vinyl and plastic material on the other hand is higher but the maintenance cost is much lower than wood; making it easy to recover the money spent on erecting this kind of deck over a period of time.

What about metal, it does not absorb moisture but is not the most popular material for decks in residences. It is the most costly as compared to wood, plastic or composite but still it is the easiest to maintain and is most durable. One thing though, metal decks are so cold and unwelcoming.

The wood-plastic composite materials are exactly like plastic in texture and can be in many attractive colors. It is slightly more expensive as compared to wood but is a lot easier to maintain. Wood is most likely to catch mildew that is next to impossible to clean properly.

Wood is preferred over plastics and composites as these do not give the natural texture, feel and warmth of wood. Try to get a balance; is it costs, the look or feel of the material for deck flooring that will win the day.

The main factor that you should always take into account is the cost, maintenance, durability, and any other special characteristics as you go out to select the material to use for the flooring.

Although other plastic materials do not have the natural qualities of wood, it is cheap, but most people are also looking for that natural look and feel of wood. The home owner must balance costs and the structural benefits of the product.

The choice of material depends on cost, care, longevity and appearance plus any other special attributes.

Getting Your House Decked Out

Adding a deck to your property is not just a way of accessing more sunshine and fresh air. It also increases the market value of your property and, in the summer, it virtually gives you an extra room - or two!

Having a deck to access means outdoor eating and barbecuing for most of us. For others it can mean relaxed sunbathing or a pleasant place to read. For teenagers, it means a place to hang out and chat and laugh away from the watchful eye (and ear) of mom. The whole family will benefit!

Once you have the pleasure and freedom of being able to walk out on your own deck, you will always want to have a deck. So how much would it cost you? One quote gives the national average cost for a deck as around $8,000.00. This is using medium priced lumber and hiring a contractor.

Decks are reported to give a national average of 55% return on your money when it comes to selling your home, so in terms of dollar value, over half the money you expend will be returned to you.

If you live in an some areas of California, the return is quoted as high as 143% due to its mild climate and consequently the residents' constant usage of a deck. This means that if you spent $8,000.00 on a deck you could increase the value of your property by over $11,000.00! If you make the deck a family project and invite everyone to help for the weekend, (like the old days of 'barn raising') you can also cut costs by saving on the contractor fees.

Another way to cut costs is to choose economy materials, but this choice is also dependent on how long you will plan to stay at the house before selling, and how good you are at up-keep.

If you want totally maintenance-free, these days you can buy man made composite lumber or all-vinyl decking. Neither is economy-priced but both are guaranteed to last years and years! Composite lumber combines properties of both wood and plastic. It is slip resistant, does not splinter or warp, and needs no sealants or protection. It can be painted or stained if you want and boasts low water absorption. Composite lumber cannot be damaged by water, sun or insects.

Vinyl decking is durable in all climates. It is also slip resistant and has excellent durability against rotting or warping. There is a limited color choice, it being available in three colors, tan, gray and white, but one big plus is that it only needs cleaning with a garden hose.

An important quality of vinyl decking is the fact that it is virtually stain-free. Both the composite lumber and the vinyl decking are more expensive initially than regular lumber; however, they are also environmentally friendly. The manufacturers of composite lumber decking guarantee that they use no virgin wood and specify that they use re-cycled plastic grocery bags in the manufacturing process. It is always very cool underfoot.

If you decide to build a more traditional deck and use regular lumber, the medium priced woods are fir and cedar, with redwood being more expensive. You can save more money by using pressure treated wood, which is resistant to insects and water damage, but will not endure the sun so well in extremely sunny areas.

Patio Versus Deck

So you know you want to create that perfect outdoor living space in your backyard, but you haven't decided whether or not it will be a patio or it will be a deck. They're both great options, but a patio is probably the best way to go. This is especially true for the do it yourself crowd.

Unless you have lots of carpentry experience and have mastered the art of measures and miters, working with wood or composite decking materials can be quite a challenge. Of course it always looks easy, but it's also easy to make mistakes when cutting all the wood. These mistakes can add up and be quite costly due to wasted time and material.

On the other hand, if you choose a relatively simple pattern, laying a stone, brick, or paver patio can be much simpler for the average do-it-yourselfer. Obviously, the more square the pattern, the fewer cuts are necessary. This makes for a fairly straightforward installation process that can be done over a weekend or two if working with the proper base.

With a deck, you must first set your concrete footings and then build up from there. For a patio, you do have to excavate in order to level the ground, but concrete mixing shouldn't be necessary. Just dig down several inches, add the proper gravel base then compact with a vibrating compactor you can rent for the weekend. Next, top with builder's sand and compact again. Once everything is completely level and compacted, you're ready to start laying your patio floor.

Of course, either a deck or a patio will end up with some accumulation of dirt and mildew. However, a patio can take a good power washing or scrubbing better than a wooden deck. With repeated cleanings, the finish of the deck will quickly disintegrate, which leads to increased maintenance.

Speaking of maintenance, wood decking will need sealing or staining at least every other year or so. Even then, the wood will eventually be damaged from water and sun to the point of needing replacement after several years. A stone or brick patio, though, could easily last a hundred years if properly installed.

All things considered, patios are still continuing to increase in popularity these days, but there are still times when a deck is the perfect option. For example, building a stone patio off a second story or elevated location would pose a severe difficulty, but a deck might work there just perfectly.

Whatever your choice, make sure to do the research and plan properly and you'll end up with outdoor living space that is perfect for you and will also increase the value of your home. Just remember, measure twice and cut once!

How to Decorate Your Deck and Give it a New Look

Decks and patios are a great way to spend free time outside with the family or just enjoying nature. They can be the center of family occasions, parties, bar-b-ques or an outlet for reading, writing, and just plain relaxing. Having a deck atmosphere that sets the right mood is critical to getting the most enjoyment out of your deck. This can be achieved with a few decorative additions, a simple remodel, or a complete deck overhaul. Here's a few tips and tricks you can use to learn how to decorate your deck, make your old deck look new, and make your new deck standout.

1. First, you should consider the material the deck is made from. Today there are composite materials like TREX, AZEK, and Versatex that look like wood but are much more resistant to rotting and the elements. Some of them are designed to last a lifetime. If you plan to live in your home for a long time, it can be advantageous to consider and invest in a composite deck that will last much longer and look new for a very long time. Staining a deck is a good option for wood, but make sure the wood is treated properly so that the stain lasts the longest. Some composites can be stained and will hold the stain for longer periods of time.

2. You can also upgrade your deck with more decorative railings or posts. These can cost more, but can dictate the architectural style of the deck and feel of it. Aluminum railings are better for exterior use and will resist the normal rust associated with wrought-iron. Decorative PVC posts and railings can give you the same rich look of an interior railing, but in a completely rot and moisture free application that will last for years.

3. A trellis is a good addition to a deck and can create a wall of privacy so that you can screen out the views of your neighbors. It can add an upward dimension to the deck and give it a closed feel. You can also have overhead crossbeams installed. These can create a sunscreen or allow you the ability to make a vine cover overhead that will turn your deck into a green sanctuary.

4. For simple wood railings, why not give them a decorative upgrade with some deck railing window boxes. Decorating a deck is with deck rail planters can transform a plain deck to a flower sanctuary. Nowadays, you can find planters that are designed to attach to the railing allowing you to wrap your complete deck in planter boxes and hanging vines and flowers for a dramatic effect that will leave your neighbors green with envy. A freestanding planter could also work for a more private showing of your flowers.

Matt Buquoi is the owner of Flower Window Boxes, a popular online window box company that specializes in affordable no rot window boxes, deck rail planters, and freestanding planters. These deck rail planters and freestanding planters have been featured on The Today Show as "the last window boxes you will ever buy." They are a great way to transform a simple deck or patio railing. Eight Ways to Enjoy Your Deck Before Summer Ends

Summer in the Pacific Northwest is on its way out, but there are still a few nice days left to enjoy your cedar deck. Here are a few ideas to help you get some last-minute backyard relaxation:

1. Enhance the seating. Add comfy, padded seat cushions to your outdoor furniture to make your deck more alluring for lounging and chatting with friends or family. Take your moments of leisure outside as much as possible while you still can.

2. Bring out colorful fabrics. As the weather begins to cool, a colorful throw rug might provide just the warmth and comfort you need to continue relishing your cedar or composite deck as much as possible. Include a water-resistant tablecloth to help brighten up the space and recapture the fading colors of summer.

3. Include outdoor lighting. The days are getting shorter, but that doesn't mean your outdoor time has to. Add some illumination to your deck, such as tiki torches, lanterns, solar-powered lamps and Citronella candles, to help enhance the waning sun.

4. Bring your garden closer. Cedar and composite decking materials are made to be water-resistant, so don't shy away from adding potted plants to your deck. A simple combination of herbs and annuals can enhance your outdoor pleasure with delightful scents and colors. As an added bonus, your potted plants can easily be brought inside or under cover during the harsh winter weather.

5. Bring electronic entertainment outside. Any time you spend on your laptop, cell phone or listening to the stereo can also be spent out on your deck. you'll have all winter to check your email indoors -- grab a portable radio and your latest electronic device and head outside to take advantage of the sun.

6. Have an end-of-summer barbecue. Whether or not you own a grill, invite some friends over for an outdoor meal. If you don't have the time or inclination to cook a big feast, ask everyone to contribute a dish for a potluck.

7. Have an astronomy party. Print out some pictures of constellations from the Internet and have everyone lie down and try to spot them. (Your rug and seat cushions will come in handy here.) In most Northwest locations, you can typically see at least a few regardless of the time of night. Try making up your own and giving them names.

8. Put on an ice cream party for the kids. Dish up the ice cream in the kitchen and then send them outdoors to add whatever toppings they like. Offer unusual treats such as raisins, cereal or popcorn. With the durability of cedar decks and composite decking materials, don't worry if anyone makes a mess -- a simple hose down, and all should be good as new.

Pool Decking - The Perfect Way To Beautify The Area Around Your Pool

Pool decking is not just for placing a trim around your pool. It is a place of leisure where you can relax and enjoy the beautiful summer day. You can have decking built around your above ground pool just as you can with your inground pool. With inground swimming pools, the decking tends to be part of the pool installation process, but the decking for above ground pools can be added afterwards. Pool decking needs to be smooth and not be hot to the feet during the hot summer days.

You can use wood, composite, tiles, stone or concrete as the material for pool decking. There are many textures and designs you can get in all these decking materials both for inground pool decking and for above ground pools. With above ground pools, the swimming pool decking usually includes stairs and you can either have the deck built so that it just gives access to the swimming pool or you can have it all the way around. Aluminum is a popular choice in decking for above ground pools and there are many kits you can buy that include everything you need.

No matter what design you opt to have for your inground pool decking, you do need to make sure that it is slip resistant. In order to have wood decking of this nature, you have to add coarse material to the paint or stain and this makes the pool decking hard to walk on in bare feet. Composite swimming pool decking is the ideal solution for a swimming pool because it is slip resistant and it won't rot or decay from continued exposure to water and humidity.

When you have a swimming pool in your backyard, you don't want to spend time each spring refinishing the decking. With the plastic, vinyl and aluminum pool decking on the market, once you install it, you never have to touch it again. The most maintenance you will have to do with this swimming pool decking is to wash it off occasionally to keep it clean. It won't rot or decay and you will never have to deal with an insect infestation. There is no danger to small children because of any chemicals used in the manufacturing process of composite inground pool decking.

You can have pool decking that matches the color of your house or simulate the look of real wood. Either one will add atmosphere to your backyard and increase the value of your home immensely. When you see the many different styles of pool decking available, you may have a hard time deciding exactly which one you want to have.

Nowadays we get cheap awnings also in the market. The awnings are for people who like to sit in the backyard and keep jazzing. They can put up awnings in the backyard for the shelter from the sun's rays. The ideal for patios awnings, deck awnings, terrace awnings, balcony awnings, and poolside awnings or over the grande retractable awning series features our largest awnings, which are often used in commercial awnings applications or for homes where a large expanse or projection is required. And our Mirage series retractable awning is great for smaller windows and doors.

Retractable awning:

The four level of retractable awning with various options giving you a wide selection which will provide shade on your deck or patio. The retractable awnings are given much extra importance and even used as a furnishing to enhance the look of a place. So they are not limited to roof covering and shelters. Instead of a customary shape and a dark hue they are given special cuts so that they look better. Mostly scallops are used for the edge designing. But in fashionable times more and more different cuts are made available. So that you have an exceptional look. Retractable awnings have automation in them so they rise and close at the push of a button. At the same time they can be manually installed. Sometimes awnings are even vertically hanged from a door. All you have to do is roll it up when you are through with the day or roll it down.

Deck Patio Ideas-Is your Home "Decked"-Up?

To make homes look interesting, different and unique there are several things which can be done. Architects, interior-decorators and common people are now trying to devise innovative ideas to spice-up homes. People are making even the most obscure corners of their homes look attractive with the help of various means. Thus one such area of homes which can be made to look strikingly wonderful is the deck patio.

How can the Deck Patio in your home look Beautiful?

The deck patios in your dwellings can be made to look unique by implementing the following ideas and means:

1) Deck patios can be made to look interesting by making decks out of different types of woods. The different types of woods which can be used for making attractive decks are redwood, Alaskan yellow cedar, white cedar, treated wood, iron wood, foreign wood, water-repellent wood, wood tiles and other exterior wood.

2) Deck patios can be made to look great by using vintage woodwork and rhino decks.

3) Decks can also be made of wooden composite decks and products like ezdeck, trimax plastic lumber and timber deck can be used.

4) Beautiful patio decks can also be made of vinyl. Thus individuals can have vinyl decks, plastic lumber yard, rhino deck and new life decks.

5) Deck patios can look beautiful with brick work and brick tiles.

6) It is necessary that deck patios are made by taking the help of professional contractors who specialize in decks. They can offer many options, including integrating your deck with stone patios. They can also install electrical wiring for lights and heaters and can even run a gas line through the deck to an outdoor grill and/or piping to a portable kitchen.

7) It is also possible to outfit the patio with a barbecue grill.

Conclusion:

Deck patios must be built with strong and long-lasting materials even if they are expensive. A patio is the perfect place to unwind after a hard day's work. It is also a great place to entertain guests. Deck patios are often overlooked part of the home. Thus they can be customized with furniture, plants, and decorative accents to become a restful haven. Irrespective of the style of homes, a patio will increase its value and would definitely be rewarding in many ways!

Poor Deck and Stair Construction Can Kill

In a recent article published in The Los Angeles Times, July 6th of this year, a tragic deck collapse resulting in serious injury and death, is reported. The deck was part of a three story apartment complex in a Birmingham suburb. Seven party-goers is all it took to create this tragic event. Unfortunately, this is an all to common occurrence now days. Reports are continually surfacing, confirming the growing frequency of these serious, life threatening collapses.

Over the past several years, much has been done to address deck and stair safety issues, but we still have a long way to go. One glaring example of the failure in deck and stair safety protocol is the industry standard of permitting "hot dipped galvanized" anchors, screws, hangers and other hardware to be in direct contact with ACQ, pressure treated wood. The galvanic corrosion created between the high copper content of the wood and the galvanizing is so severe that the normal industry standard of G90 galvanizing will corrode in as little as 12 months and G185, such as Z-MaxR can be gone in 24 months. The industry (including code officials) has adopted G185 as a fall back position with no engineering testing available to substantiate the validity or longevity of this adoption...this is a "knee jerk" reaction and is an accident waiting to happen. Without a barrier between the pressure treated wood and galvanized hardware, serious corrosion is inevitable.

Take for example the new NADRA (North American Deck and Railing Association) study that examined the number of injuries caused by outdoor deck stairs and porches from 2003 to 2007. The report confirms that deck and stair injuries are on the increase. NADRA points to a 2003 study showing a total of 37,760 injuries which required a visit to the hospital. Of these injuries, 6,120 were a result of structural failure or collapse. Further, the report shows that by 2007, the incidents of serious injury had risen to 55,160. Quoting from the report- "Nearly 15% of all injuries are a result of structural failure". Wood decks are constantly exposed to the elements and they have a limited life span of 10-15 years. As you can see, important to have your deck and deck stairs inspected so that signs of wood decay and deterioration can be repaired.

Other codes address "rail post support" safety. A rail post per code regulations is required to support a lateral load of 200 lbs. This is a poorly enforced area of the code and with many inspectors content with the bump test. If it doesn't move too much when they bump it with their hip, the rail will pass inspection. Many rail posts are simply lagged or nailed to the rim joists and post which are mounted directly to the deck surface will simply not meet code. The tragedy is, there are systems available on the market that correctly address this problem. Simpson, USP and Deck-Loc have brackets which will meet code for rim joist attachment but there's only one adjustable bracket system (discussed below) which will meet code for wood or composite stairs.

Attention is now being given to the ability of the vertical post's strength when hit by various degrees of lateral thrust pressure. These new directives, requiring the vertical rail post to support a minimum of 200 lbs. of lateral thrust, is making engineered stair systems extremely popular, with their ability to withstand over 500 lbs of lateral thrust for the 'rail post support' structural sections of the overall decking plans.

Stairs are perhaps the most overlooked area of construction. Stairs using standard cut stringers have been used for eons and are "grandfathered" into code as accepted construction. Stringers are cut from 2x12's and greatly weakened in the process. Several stringers are then run longitudinal down length of the stair to make up for the strength loss during cutting. Long stair run tend to bounce and stringer failure is not uncommon. Additionally, many of these stairs are built without risers which is a "child safety" issue in many states. General Contractor and renowned professional deck builder, Pat Noonan of Minnesota says, "Of the 50+ decks I have torn off and replaced, not one had a stair system that outlasted the deck." The majority of them had shaky, unsafe stairs, and it was the main reason they were doing the rest of the deck."

Engineered stair systems such as adjustable bracket systems for wood stairs and composite stairs overcome many of these problems and safety issues. This is due to the much more rigorous testing required to gain ICC/ES acceptance for a stair system which has not been simply "grand fathered" into common use. This adjustable bracket system is engineered in a completely different manner to conventional stair construction. These adjustable steel brackets lock the risers and treads onto the stringers, with a solid, joist hanger type connection. Only two stringers are required for stairs up to 7' in width. This becomes possible because the two outside stringers are full depth, acting like beams running down the length of the stair ( only three end are cuts required per stringer). Next, the risers (which are locked to the steel brackets) span across the stair like joist hangers, at each step supporting the tread.

The result is a "rock solid" stair which has been tested at over 1,200 lbs. per sq. ft.(uniform distributed load), well in excess of the code requirement of only 100 lbs per sq. ft. (commercial load). The steel brackets adjust to form any rise or run required and are powder coated over a hot dipped galvanized finish. The powder coating (paint) sets up an effective barrier between the pressure treated wood and the galvanized finish, preventing corrosion. Additionally the structural risers overcome the child safety issue (found on stairs without risers) and as mentioned above, the brackets have been tested to exceed code requirements for lateral load applied to "rail post" supports.

General Contractor Pat Noonan continues, "Craftsmanship will only take you so far when you are dealing with a inferior framing system and components. When deck builders notch steps out of a 2"x12", they are cutting all the strength out of the wood and putting the entire weight of the stair plus anyone walking up or down on 4" of wood left in the 2"x12". With an adjustable bracket system, they are putting the weight on 11' of solid wood- there's no comparison".

EZ Stairs adjustable bracket stair system allows builders to construct stairs with a wide range of materials such as redwood, cedar, tropical wood, treated wood, untreated wood, vinyl, steel, and composites. This stair system allows for customized rise and treads configurations which can be adjusted to meet all building codes for any interior or exterior application- ICC approved. It is the only adjustable stair bracket system available anywhere. The EZ Stairs system will allow you to build strong, easy to install stairs, in less time and with less money than traditional construction. You will have stairs that will last for many years longer than conventional stair construction. To help you figure out how many stairs you will need, the website provides a free stair calculator.

EZ Stairs introduced the new patented adjustable dual-purpose exterior/interior brackets in 2003. In 2004, it won Pro Sales Magazine's Editor's Choice award for new product innovation in the construction industry. In 2005, it introduced its composite deck compatibility solution and was chosen for LBM Journal's 'Hot Products' Award at the 2005 International Builders Show, and again voted one of the fifty 'Hot Products' at the 2008 International Builders Show.
