Your Guide to Hardwood Decking Varieties

There are so many kinds of hardwood decking out there, how do you pick the perfect type for your outdoors area? Here is your guide to the key hardwood decking types to help you choose...

Ipe Hardwood Decking

Ipe hardwood is also known as Brazilian hardwood. This type of decking has a lot of strings to its bow. Nature has done Ipe hardwood a lot of favours. Not only is it naturally insect and rot resistant, it is also very resistant to fire. The wood itself originates in South America and has a luxurious dark, olive complexion. In sunlight this colour will fade to a lighter, grayer tone over time. To preserve the original look you will need to apply an appropriate finish every year.

Since Ipe hardwood is up to five times denser than many other types of hardwood, it is much more durable and is comparatively long lasting. Unfortunately, as it is a natural material, it will not last forever and will require a certain amount of maintenance and care after installation.

Western Red Cedar Decking

Native to the UK, Western red cedar wood is a durable natural wood option which has the added benefit of being notably lightweight. This lightweight property makes red cedar hardwood easy to transport and install. On top of this, red cedar secretes its own natural oils which repel insects.

In appearance this form of hardwood decking starts life as a red-brown and gradually fades to a silver-grey tone.

Teak Decking

Teak is a popular form of decking as it has natural weather-resistant properties and does not require sealant. You'll find teak in garden furniture and boat decking for this very reason. Hailing from Indonesia, teak hardwood decking initially has a golden tone which, over time, becomes silver-grey.

Although it is highly weather resistant, it is not infallible. Over time your teak decking will require plenty of TLC and, because it is a natural material, it will not last forever.

Redwood Decking

Redwood is, confusingly, a lovely silvered wood which is comparatively rot-resistant. However, many decking experts will tell you that redwood decking looks better with sealant. It is less weather resistant in comparison to other hardwood decking types and, if subjected to long periods of dampness, it will blacken.

Composite Hardwood Decking

Composite hardwood decking is anything you want it to be! It is available in a wide range of styles, tones, colours and finishes which look as good (often better) than natural hardwood varieties. The best bit is that composite decking is carefully engineered to ensure that it is fully weather, rot and insect resistant. It requires the absolute minimum maintenance, just a quick hose down every year or so, and will stay looking perfect with very little effort.

The downside, of course, is price. Composite decking is more expensive but it will last for decades and will require next to no further investment in treatments, finishes and repairs.
