Floor Materials For Building Your Own Deck

One of the most popular do-it-yourself projects is to build your own deck. A hand built deck always sounds good, but few people give much thought to the flooring they need.

The excitement of building a deck quickly wears off for most people when they find that they've bitten off more than they can chew. For those who can afford it, contractors can be hired to complete the design and construction. If funds are short, now is the time to find out who your true friends are. Failing that, a person can always complete it a bit a time over a longer period.

Materials used for deck flooring can be wood, vinyl or plastics, metal and wood-plastic composites. Wood and all its variations is a classic material that has long been used to build decks. Wood is one of the cheapest and most popular materials available but its maintenance and care may add up over the years. The initial high cost of vinyl or plastics material is offset by the cost of its maintenance, which is lower than that of wood.

Metal definitely won't take on any water but is rarely used for residential decks! It costs more than wood, plastic or composite, but is more durable and easier to maintain. However, using metal for your deck can make it look cold and uninviting. Wood-plastic composites, like plastic, can come in a variety of textures and colors. It costs slightly more than wood but lasts longer and is easier to maintain. Sometimes, the wood component of the composite may develop mildew and is difficult to clean effectively.

Plastics and composites naturally do not look like wood. This may be an off-putting for some people who prefer the natural feel and look of wood. As such, you would have to strike a balance between costs, look and feel of the materials you use for your deck flooring.

It is always important to determine the cost, maintenance, longevity, appearance and any special characteristics of the material you have in mind for the flooring.
