Non-Slip Decking Materials for Pools

Is there such a thing as non-slip decking materials? There are many questions when it comes to choosing the right decking materials for your pool deck. What's the safest material to use? Is there such a thing as non-slip plastic decking? What's a hardwood that actually resists splinters? Along with aesthetic issues such as whether or not the color of the wood should match the wood used inside the home, a homeowner also needs to ensure the decking material is of excellent quality. Most owners choose to build their pool decks with hardwood because it continues to be a proven and reliable construction medium. However, there are still several things to consider when choosing which species of lumber to use to build your very own pool deck.

How the deck is to be used is a major point when deciding which wood to go with. For example, certain types of wood take a longer time to heat up, which means less chance of feet getting burned on a hot summer day. Consideration must also be taken to be sure the species of wood doesn't get moldy when exposed to too much water. There are certain types of wood that get very slippery, and deteriorate quickly when constantly wet. Your wood choice should depend on the area of where you live, being sure to take note the climate conditions and if termites are a major concern.

Natural exotic hardwoods would be my first choice for my pool deck. Ipe, Cumaru, and Tigerwood all have outstanding ratings in rot resistance, slip resistance and durability. Choosing any of these three hardwoods will give you a deck with the utmost structural stability. Your new hardwood pool deck will also ensure a solid sense of security and confidence. The only problem you'll have is deciding which color works better with the home.

Still, why these species of hardwood? Why not composite or PVC decking for pools?

Ipe, Cumaru, and Tigerwood are among the densest hardwoods in the world; strong, naturally resistant to rot, abrasion, weather, and a lot of activity. If you purchase from a reputable supplier, you can also purchase hardwood pool decking that is virtually knot free, with very little to no warping. They age nicely with exposure to the weather (virtually no splintering or checking) and can be protected with the application of UV protective coating. As for vinyl or composite decking? Last time I checked, the best use of plastic and water was for a slip and slide....not a pool where accidents are more likely to occur.

Ultimately, the three types of wood (Ipe, Tigerwood, and Cumaru) are among the strongest and most resilient untreated decking materials on the market today. They have strength, stability, durability, and natural resistance to decay, wet conditions and don't need chemicals to keep their lifespan.

So, if you're thinking about building a pool deck, look no further than true natural non-slip decking made of hardwood.
