Advantages of Longlife Composite Decking Over More Traditional Wooden Decks

In a world where we are consistently being asked to be more environmentally conscious we should investigate and utilise all products available to us to make as much of a difference as possible. Longlife composite decking offers a viable alternative to the more traditional timber products which continue to diminish our planets' natural resources.

Longlife is an environmentally sourced alternative to wooden decking, made from bottles to bags, packaging to off cuts, all manner of polyethylene plastics are recycled, then mixed with recycled wood fibres.

It is not only environmentally sourced but also has incredibly low maintenance requirements compared with traditional timber. In a world where we need to increasingly protect our work life balance composite alternatives require very little attention each year, with no need for sanding, sealing or painting, therefore does not need the annual time put aside to spend maintaining your outdoor area. It is also easy to fit and so potentially can be fitted and forgotten about.

Longlife composite decking's stain resistance, anti-slip properties, lower heat absorption rate that wood, hidden screws, no splinters and cooler to the touch than wood means that it is incredibly child friendly. Around the hot tub or swimming pool, the resistance to mould, insects and fungi (as well as it's anti-slip properties) makes it a perfect alternative to timber alternatives.

Longlife is a hard-wearing option for marina wharfs where it is a more durable alternative to wood, with minimal slime or fungi build up and no unsightly rotting. It also has a higher resistance to salt water and has a lower water absorption rate than wood, as well as anti-slip properties that makes for a safer environment for water based activities.

Composite decking is also ideal for commercial use with its low maintenance properties. Whilst initial installation can be slightly more expensive than conventional wood, after a short time, due to its low maintenance requirements, this alternative becomes the cheaper option. UV inhibiting pigments also ensures that this "new" product holds its colour for longer than wood and anti-slip properties make for a safe alternative to wood. It works just like a hard wood, but perhaps the biggest advantage for commercial areas is that it is a light-weight alternative enabling fast and simple fitting, with no need for heavy lifting equipment.

This alternative type of decking also has a genuine longlife with standard warranties of up to 20 years it is a true alternative to wood which are not expected to last for an extended life span.

Whilst timber continues to be the more popular alternative currently to composite (no doubt for its initial price, particularly for softwood), longlife must be seen as the decking choice of the future with its environmental properties and several key advantages over more traditional forms, I am sure that we will be seeing a consistent shift in the market towards longlife composite decking in the future.

Types of Outdoor Decks

These days there are many types of decking materials available on the market. Purchasing a deck involves making some important decisions like choosing the material and selecting the overall size and appearance of the deck. People interested in designing a deck or having a deck built will be aware of the many kinds of decking material available to choose from. Decking may be an expensive outlay but it will add value and charm to a family home. When choosing decking products, you should look at the kind of decking components you prefer, you may want to also take into consideration how long that deck components will last for as well as the maintenance that the various different decking materials require. Deciding on the best material will help ensure the decking for your property is a good investment decision for the future. When choosing a deck there are many factors to consider, such as your budget, style of your home, style of your neighbors homes and outdoor areas. People in different areas will choose different types of decking due to the availability and cost of materials and the weather conditions.

Natural stone Decks

This is an option for individuals who want to construct a spectacular and classic patio. Stone decks look remarkable. The slabs are not as heavy as you may imagine, this is a very tough and durable material. In Australia stone decking is somewhat expensive and difficult to transport. People in Brisbane who want a stone patio would usually contact a paving company as opposed to a deck builder, and may work in conjunction with a builder to build the roof over the stone deck.

Preserved Soft Wood Decks

Decks created from pressure-treated pine can last for several years if the surface is properly cared for, but no matter how often a preserved pine deck is treated, pressure treated lumber can still warp. Wood obtained from older pine is less likely to bend and distort than wood taken from younger trees. Regardless of the age of the wood it can still warp, when exposed to extreme heat, rain and general weathering. Brisbane has a tropical climate with very warm and damp conditions throughout much of the year making wood decking increasingly less popular. Wood decking may not be suitable for Brisbane homes especially if the deck is to be uncovered.

Hard Wood Decks

Hard wood decking material is a fantastic option for those people who can afford the luxury this decking material gives. Hardwood still needs to be treated but is much more durable than pine and other soft woods. Hardwood is expensive and often imported due to deforestation restrictions.

Timber Hybrid Decks

Wood composite is often used for decking timber; this is a combination of wood fiber and plastic. This material is gaining in popularity as it is very durable and has a similar texture to real wood, the synthetic component makes this material really simple to clean and it will not absorb any moisture. It is an attractive material that should not warp or split. Despite the fact that timber composite decking is a lot more costly than pressure-treated wood, it's well worth the cost. Timber composite deck materials last longer than timber. Assuming wood composite decking material is something you can afford, it is an outstanding option for any outside area.

Vinyl Decks

The look and feel of vinyl is similar to wood. Vinyl decking is trouble free and easy to own, it can handle a lot of abuse and is a great choice for families with children. Vinyl deck material is easy to mop, and it's available in many textures and colours. People often choose Vinyl because it does not get hot to the touch under the sun, making this a particularly good choice for home owners in hot climates.

The Advantages of Composite Decks

When you go to the time and expense to have a deck built on your property, you obviously want to be assured that it is done correctly and is constructed from a material that will last forever, or as close to it as you can get. For this reason, among others, the composite decks material choices are gaining in popularity everyday. Before you decide on traditional wood, take some time to learn a little bit about this newer material option. Your builder should be able to add all kinds of information and opinions about it as well. To get you started to understanding this product option, here a few of its distinct features.

One of the first concerns you are likely to have about using a new product for your deck needs is going to be appearance. You have nothing to worry about with composite decks. This product is made from a combination of plastic and fiberglass. That means it is easy for manufacturers to create just about any color or design into the surface of the material. You could choose a natural looking wood grain and color design, or decide on something more unique with a colored product in green or even red shades. It's up to you.

Building composite decks does cost a little more than the traditional wood options. With that you in mind you understandably want to know that the composite will stand up to the challenges presented by the weather and everyday wear and tear. You already know it will look great. Let's put it this way, composite decks aren't gong to warp, splinter, or fade. You can expect several years of exceptional looking decking that is safe and sturdy. The larger expense in the beginning pays off down the road.

Before you make your final decision about your deck, make sure you look into composite decks. Most homeowners are very satisfied with their decision when they choose composite materials.

Products For Beautiful Low-Maintenance Decks

For many homeowners, there is nothing quite like having a deck. After all, a well built and designed deck provides the opportunity for a wide list of outdoor entertainments-whether it is simply sitting back and relaxing after a hard day at work or having a family cookout. Consequently, having a beautiful and functional deck is a definite selling (and staying) feature of any home, but only if is well built and requires a minimal amount of maintenance. So, if you are looking to upgrade your current deck or have one built, there are many options to consider to ensure that your deck is all that you want, and need, it to be.

Some of the most popular choices in decking today are the low maintenance composites, which are made from half recycled wood fibers and half plastic resins, or the ultra-low maintenance plastic decking that is typically made from PVC and high density polyethylene (HDPE). Both of these choices result in beautiful decks that are both durable and easy to maintain. These composites are designed to look like real wood, and can be found in a wide assortment of colors, textures, profiles and materials.

Composite deck boards were introduced about 30 years ago, and originally the boards were shaped and colored to resemble finished wood; however, they did not have the natural texture and color variations of real wood. In addition, they were susceptible to grease stains and mold just as real unfinished wood is. In recent years, manufactures have learned how to reduce these problems, as well as add natural textures and color variations.

The Pros of Composite Decking:

There are many reasons that people are choosing to use composites over natural wood. These reasons are:

Composites are easy to install and can be lifted and cut just like real wood.
Composite wood has been designed to withstand all the stresses placed on it-rain, UV rays, ice, snow...
Cleaning the composite is easy and can be done by simply sweeping and hosing off with water.
There is no need to paint or stain the composites each year.
There is little concern of rotting or termites.
Composites are installed using a fastener system, so there are no screws or nails to get snagged on, and the surface is smooth.
Composites are durable and do not splinter or have excess scratching.
You can typically get a warranty on composites, something unavailable with woods, as composites are man-made and thus has more backing its protection.
Composite decks are child-friendly as they are virtually splinter-free, require little time on cleaning and do not have to be stained or painted. Consequently, you have more time for enjoying your family and visiting with friends!

The Cons of Composite Decking:

Perhaps the biggest negative in composites is that they cost more than natural wood. Also, you should keep in mind that most composites come with detailed instructions that must be followed exactly, else the warranty is invalid.

Reasons to Choose Composite Decks Instead of Wooden Decks

There are several reasons that a homeowner may decide to add a porch or deck to their home. They are a universal and extremely versatile space that can serve many different functions, from an outdoor barbecue area to a child's outdoor play area. It's no wonder they are in high demand. When completing the addition, a homeowner has several choices to make about the area, the finishing, the posts, etc. All of the choices and options can become confusing and overwhelm many. However, a homeowner should not be confused about what to make the structure from. Composite decks are a wood alternative that have several benefits over wood.

The first is the low maintenance and upkeep involved in this type of material. A wooden structure needs to receive routine treatments to protect against water and termite damage. If it does not receive the proper treatments, rain will eventually cause the wood to wear away, damaging the integrity of the structure. The same goes for the termites. This can put the safety of those who walk across it at risk. With composite decks, however, there is no need to treat the deck or porch. The unique material is water resistant. This means there is no reason to worry about rain. Termite damage is also something that doesn't need to be addressed since the deck is not made out of real timber.

Most wooden structures do not come with a good warranty. There are too many things that can damage them, like the bugs and water mentioned earlier. A deck made of this wooden alternative, however, will come with a warranty on two aspects of the material: the structural soundness and the appearance. Since it is much more durable than wood, some companies will offer a 25-year warranty on their products. When it comes to appearances, a decent warranty is offered as well. This warranty protects against things like fading that may occur from the sunlight or stains that occur from dropping or spilling something on the structure. Most companies will also allow for the warranty to still be in effect if ownership of the home is transferred to someone else.

Another reason people choose this wood alternative is that it's a great investment. A deck or porch always increases the value of a home. Composite decks, which last much longer than a wooden structure, are an excellent selling point that a realtor will use to bring in the buyers. Since they are in such a high demand, potential buyers are usually willing to increase their offer, which brings in more money for the seller (something no one would mind when selling his or her home).

Composite decks are a great alternative to wood. Their low maintenance allows owners to stay worry free and to enjoy their porch and all that it has to offer them. This is the ultimate benefit because it is, after all, the reason it was added in the beginning.

Pressure Washer Business; Cleaning Composite Decks

There is a new trend in the way wood decks are constructed; composite decks and railings. Recently had the opportunity to go on a bidding job with a deck cleaning contractor to bid on cleaning and treating a large deck. When we got there we found out the deck was not made of wood at all; it was made of composite. There was nothing to treat unless of course you want a spray with armor all. It did clean rather nicely kind of like washing a plastic fence. The new trend in composite railings has come about because the final railings do a better job facing down the elements and therefore owners and contractors often decide to put in the composite railings even though there are slightly more expensive because they look great for much longer.

Composite railings that are built too long between posts generally have a problem with separation so the posts seem to be closer together, when they are not debris gets inside any between the spaces often bugs crawl and it makes a general mess, when cleaning composite railings you may notice quite a bit of dirt coming down between the cracks and therefore it takes a lot more Flushing Power to clean the deck than it would a wood only deck. When using more water you have twice the chance of flooding the vegetation below if there is any in this case there was, one of the most beautiful flower gardens I have seen in any middle-class neighborhood. We would need to cover the flowers and find proper drainage for the excess water or actually uses squirt bottle and do them by hand. We imagine that if the lady watched us use a squirt bottle, that she would probably throw our butts out in the cul-de-sac.

One of the composite railings that we've been most impressed with has been from Crystal White Corporation. Their weather best natural wood vinyl is sturdy and attractive and very easy to clean, almost too easy almost like we should not even charge for clean Crystal White also makes docks which attached to concrete walk ways. The "U" beam construction makes it very easy clean and just in case we screw up is guaranteed for 10 years. Although I would say is very hard to screw up since you not need chemicals to clean it, therefore it is nearly impossible to damage wall washing. Crystal White Corporation has post every 6 to 8 feet therefore the expansion and contraction of the composite does not seem to be an issue or cause separation. Unfortunately we have also noticed that is very low maintenance and is not need to be cleaned every year, so we're losing a few sales but it looks magnificent when completed in since it is not made of wood but rather a composite wood polymeric substrate capped with co-extruded PVC it never needs sanding, painting or coating.

It will not fade and it never yellows, like we have seen some plastic fences do. It is guaranteed against cracking, peeling, insects, warping, rotting, and water damage.

The railing comes in several colors; Pacific Cedar, Western Redwood and driftwood gray and what we saw was White and looked very real. The plastic even has a wood grain texture to it. And although we did not see Crystal White's docks, their composite decking is truly incredible. We understand that Crystal White Corporation has recently licensed their product to Strandex Corporation for other wood grains. Another good thing about weather best composite decking is that it contains no copper, chromium or arsenic in its material like many pressure treated woods to.

What we like about washing it is they cannot splinter, check or come apart using a normal pressure washer with hot or cold water under 3000 P.S.I.. So it cleans very fast, needless to say if your bidding a job on the phone for a five-star resort, golf course or Marina and then you show up and see that it is composite you'll make a ton of money in a very short amount of time, be sure to bid by the job and not by the hour. So when you're completed you'll feel like God and say "...and it was Good." I almost feel like calling up the composite deck, Dock, railing and fence manufacturers and dealer reps to get a list of all commercial buildings which have installed their product because I know that is some high profit cleaning.

Composite Decking: Low-Maintenance, High-Enjoyment Decks!

With a great many decking materials, one common factor when thinking about investing in a deck is the amount of maintenance required. With composite decking, made from recycled materials, the beauty of this low-maintenance deck is rivaled only by its even, smooth surface. Composite decking has been designed to withstand all of the stresses that are placed upon decks by natural elements such as rain and UV rays as most commercial decking materials are. But Composite decking is also easy to install, requires no staining or sealing, and is easy to keep clean as well. A composite deck means less time working, and more time enjoying the deck. For the sheer enjoyment of the outdoors, it is worth considering a composite deck for this reason alone.

Composite decks: easy to install.

Composite decking is made with easy installation in mind; a composite deck is manufactured for those who value convenience along with quality. Composite decking material is lightweight - easily lifted and easily sawn like real wood. This type of decking usually comes with a hidden clip system which further ensures a straightforward deck installation while maintaining a tailored, smooth deck surface.

Composite decking: easy to maintain

Another feature of composite decking is the fact that they don't need to be stained or sealed. For many wood decks, annual staining is a minimum in order to keep it free of pests and wood-rot. Composite decking is made with these stresses in mind. There is no need to spend additional hours staining or sealing a composite deck, and so more time can be set aside for meeting with friends and family, and enjoying the outdoors together.

The easily cleaned composite deck

It takes very little effort to clean a composite deck - that's the way it was made. Just a hosing off and a sweep when required is about the extent of things when looking to keep a composite deck clean. For a residential deck, composite decking is a great solution for families with children. It's in these households that the idea of saving time is most important! Since there are no involved methods or equipment required in cleaning composite decking, you are free to turn it into a part of family time, where even the kids can be involved in the maintenance of your outdoor property.

Composite decking was designed for convenience, as well as being a quality alternative to a great many varieties of decking materials. The ease of owning such a low-maintenance deck will result in more time enjoying your property.

Composite Decking Vs Tigerwood Decks

Composite Decking Meets Its Match with Tigerwood

Composite decking rocked the world when it was first introduced a few years. Pushed as an eco-friendly product, people were sold plastic decking at a premium. Soon enough, the results and experiences of everyday homeowners came rolling in. Recalls and class action lawsuits started popping up as well as complaints and warranty requests due to de-lamination, peeling, discoloration, warping, molding, fungus spots, and other problems. Injuries were also reported from deck boards breaking.

Composite companies began defaulting on their warranties and closing their doors with some re-opening under a different name to avoid the lawsuits. Many consumers were left holding the bag since they couldn't afford to replace their existing decks. There are literally thousands of homeowners who won't even look at their deck because they're disgusted with it.

As time passed, the composite decking companies that remain have revised their products to address some of those issues but it has taken its toll. The product still has its advantages and disadvantages. The warranties many consumers have come to rely on have been re-worded to specify that labor would not be included so any replacements would be a materials only replacement and only after it was deemed defective for manufacturing reasons. Removal and replacement labor costs would not be covered. The warranties were only as solvent as the companies that wrote them. This has not faired well for some consumers. As a result, many people still complain about the quality and longevity of composite deck materials.

Enter Tigerwood.

Tigerwood decking is the epitome of the word "exotic." This tropical hardwood is commonly known as Brazilian Koa and Goncalo Alves. It features an amazing blend of brown and black streaks against light golden brown to reddish brown colors. Designers and high end consumers have recently discovered this beauty and have increased demand in their residential and commercial projects. The properties of this deck board are amazing. Naturally slip resistant and is safer than plastic decking. It is also so dense that it naturally repels wood boring insects. This means that no chemicals are needed. It also means that your family isn't exposed to toxic chemicals. You also won't find mold or fungus spots as is common in composite decking. The lifespan is well over 25 years naturally without preservatives, this is longer than people keep their homes. No worries about having to remove and replace boards every few years.

The Janka hardness scale shows this wood to be more than 4 times as strong as the California Redwood. The best part is the price. There is a substantial savings if you compare Tigerwood to composite decking. This is important because composite companies charge a premium just because they slap on an eco-friendly wood label to their product. Tigerwood decking gives you the look and feel of the tropical oasis without the expense. This wood is available in both FSC and non FSC material and comes from sustainably harvested and highly regulated forests.

Make no mistake about it; Tigerwood is as natural and as reliable as you can get. Why settle for less?

Hidden Fasteners for Composite Decks - Are They Worth It?

More and more homeowners today are choosing to have their composite decks built with hidden fasteners. With hidden fasteners a composite deck can be built without using unsightly screws or nails. But are hidden fasteners worth the added expense, and extra labor, needed to install them? Our company sells a large amount of Evergrain brand composite decking every year. At the point of sale each customer is afforded an opportunity to purchase either screws, or hidden fasteners, to attach their decking. In spite of the fact that we sell the lowest priced hidden fasteners available, and the only ones that are made for specifically for composite decking, over half of our customers purchase screws. When asked why, the answers are almost always the same: hidden fasteners are either too expensive, too time consuming to install, or both. But let's look at those responses in their proper context.

How many homeowners would be satisfied to have the screws visible in the drywall of their homes? How many houses do you find with the siding "face-nailed"? Or, how many wood floors have the screws or nails out in plain view? Imagine how much money could be saved if the drywall installer did not take the time to hide the screws. The siding on a house would be much stronger, and easier to install, if it were faced-nailed. And, wood floors could be installed for much less money if the boards were not all tongue-and-groove. People go to a lot of trouble, and expense, to insure that the fasteners on these surfaces are not visible. They expect that these fasteners will be hidden. But when it comes to decking the story seems to change.

It seems that many people expect to see the fasteners on their deck. They expect it because that is the way decking has always been installed. But things are changing quickly. More and more people are realizing that their new composite deck does not have to have exposed screws or nails. And that the added expense of hiding the fasteners is worth every penny. The reasons are obvious to anyone who has ever seen a composite deck built with high quality hidden fasteners. In fact, in the not too distant future, it is likely that hidden fasteners will be the rule, not the exception, for composite deck construction.

There are many types of hidden fasteners available. Most will fall into one of three general categories: those that require a biscuit joint, or groove, in the side of the decking, those that use prongs driven into the sides of the decking or those that use brackets attached to the sides of the joists. A unique hidden fastener made specifically for composite decking is the Aphano hidden fastener. Like any product, the advantages, and disadvantages, of each particular item must be carefully considered. But when it comes time to build a composite deck, hidden fasteners should be considered as a very viable option.

Jeff Van Fleet works for largest fence/deck contractor in the state of Montana. He is the leader of the Aphano hidden fastener project. Aphano fasteners are the only hidden deck fasteners designed for the unique characteristics of composite decking.

Composite Decks - Why They Get Dirty and How to Clean Them

Composite decks were supposed to be maintenance free and last forever, that's why everybody spent the extra money on composite decking instead of a traditional wood deck.

Now it seems that we been "had", they do get dirty, mold spots show up all over the deck like a case of the measles and anything that drips or spills on the deck, like sun tan lotion, grease, food, food condiments, etc leaves a stain that doesn't wipe off.

What is composite decking? Composite decking is nothing more than compressed wood pulp (saw dust) which is usually mixed with recycled plastic to give it some stability.

How can it get so dirty? Mold needs an organic food source to survive and the wood pulp serves that purpose, so mold will grow on composite decking just as it would on a wood deck. If you have ever seen how cardboard absorbs a drip of oil, you will understand how composite decking absorbs spills, it goes in beneath the surface but still it is visible and that is what makes cleaning tough.

Sodium percarbonate based cleaners are highly effective because when mixed with water they created a bubbling action much like "alka-seltzer" and when applied to composite decking these bubbles will actually dissolve and lift any organic material to the surface which can be easily cleaned off.

Cleaning is simple, apply the mixture to the affected area of the deck, allow it 15 minutes to penetrate and to start breaking up the stains, while the area is still wet take a deck scrub brush and in circular motions scrub the spots out, when cleaning is complete rinse the area well with water. A pressure washer may be substituted for the scrub brush, but light pressure, max 1,000 psi, is all that is needed.

The key, when cleaning is to clean small sections at a time and always keep that area wet with the mixture while scrubbing, if the area dries before the cleaning is complete the organic matter could settle back below the surface and the process would have to begin again.

Sodium percarbonate is also a great product to use to prevent mold, simply apply a coat to your deck in the spring and fall and this will break up and dissolve any organic matter that is starting to make your deck it' new home and food source.

Not all Sodium percarbonate based products are made of the same quality ingredients, strengths vary from 10 to 90% and there are additives necessary to take the sodium percarbonate mixture below the surface of the composite decking, without these additives the sodium percarbonate will only clean what sits on the top of the decking. The right formulation will be the difference in how clean your deck will come out.

Cleaning Composite Decks

Today's consumers are realizing that no wood or wood product exposed to weather is going to be completely maintenance-free. Even exotic woods like Ipe require periodic cleaning and sealing as the natural oils within the wood dry out. All exterior lumber used in deck construction should be maintained every year to protect it from the elements and ground in dirt.

Composite lumber varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, but it appears that all of the popular ones contain wood particles (these ground particles are called "wood flour" by the industry). That means that any of these particles on or near the surface of the board, no matter what they are mixed with, will react to Mother Nature the same way all wood does. Graying and staining are common problems - and the stuff of nightmares for deck owners. Manufacturers are getting calls every day from end users about these issues, and deck restoration contractors are stepping in with the fix.

Cleaning composite decks is important to keep the material looking its best. Properly cleaning composite decks should be done with a composite wood cleaner that is designed specifically for these unique materials. Some manufacturers have suggested using bleach or oxygenated bleach to clean the wood, but the results have been varied. Most pressure washing contractors who do deck renewal are finding success through products made especially for this problem, such as Flood's Composite Wood Cleaner. The key to this particular product is in the surfactants and cleaning chemicals in its formula.

This guide will give you the basic steps that should be used to get the best results when cleaning composite deck materials.

Preparing the composite deck: Sweep debris like leaves, twigs and dirt off the deck first. Then rinse off the composite lumber to cool it off and remove heavy built up deposits of dirt and mud. Rinsing off the composite deck first will cool the surface and prevent the possibility of flash drying the composite cleaner when it's applied. Also wet down plants and grass around the deck and if necessary, Cover plants, grass, concrete and any other areas you don't want the composite cleaner getting on.

Remove any stains on composite decks first! Use oxalic, citric or phosphoric acid-based cleaners to remove rust stains from metal furniture. These will also help remove leaf stains.

Use commercial degreasers containing propylene glycol, sodium hydroxide, and various detergents for removing grease and oil stains.

Spot removers or mineral spirits may be used carefully on stubborn grease or oil stains but should be washed off quickly with water, as it can damage the grain pattern. Spot removers normally include petroleum distillates, xylene, methanol, acetone, or other organic solvents. Use caution if the composite lumber has embedded color, as some solvents may affect the appearance. As always, test your cleaner on an inconspicuous spot.

To remove light mildew wash your composite deck periodically with a cleaner that contains or is mixed with Sodium Hypochlorite.

The cleaning process:

Apply your composite deck cleaner on the railings and floor in manageable sections. Cleaning too large of an area at a time may allow the composite cleaner to dry on the surface which can cause discoloration in some materials. Once the composite cleaner has sat on the surface according to the directions, carefully power wash the surface in the direction of the grain, using less than 800 PSI. Use the pressure washer to "rinse" the surface. Avoid holding the nozzle too close to the composite surface or holding it in any one spot too long. Hold the pressure wand about 8" away from the surface and "sweep" it off in a rinsing motion. Use a "golf swing" motion, and avoid washing each square inch of the surface. Keep the wand moving smoothly over the surface to avoid leaving marks. Proper technique determines the results, so take some time to practice when you are able to. Once you have completed that section, treat the next area and continue until the job is completed.

For regular maintenance, rinse off your composite deck periodically with a hose. Even if your deck appears clean, it is important to prevent build-up of pollen and other debris. Mildew stains may occur where moisture, pollens, and/or dirt are present. Mildew needs a food source to grow, which can be grass, pollens, dirt, debris, wood and wood resins.

To repair scratches, nicks, cuts and grooves in most composite decking materials you can try using a brass wire brush. Brushing will need to be consistent with the grain of the composite material and the brushed area will weather back in approximately 8-10 weeks. Make sure you try this in a hidden area first! Some materials could become discolored or damaged from wire brushing.

High-pressure washing of composite decks is not necessary or advisable. Instead, hire a properly trained pressure washing company to do it correctly and safely. Or if you must do it yourself, use the proper-strength composite lumber cleaners to do all the work for you. Then you simply RINSE using your pressure-washer. Doing it the right way means using your pressure washer to agitate slightly with MODERATE pressure and HIGH water volume. Use the pressure washer responsibly. Too much pressure on the surface of composite lumber can cause damages.

Winter Maintenance for Composite Decks

Composite decks are becoming increasingly popular due to their low maintenance needs and environmental benefits. However, homeowners who install composite decking are often surprised to find that when winter hits, their decking materials react differently to climate changes than a cedar deck would.

The following is a look at what to expect from your composite deck in winter, as well as some maintenance tips.

Color Changing

In theory, composite decking offers the best of both worlds. The wood provides strength and aesthetics, while the plastic provides protection against the elements. In reality, while the plastic does shield the wood from most moisture and sun damage, it doesn't always fully encapsulate every wood fiber. As a result, your deck may end up with some exposed wood fibers on the surface. These wood fibers can fade when exposed to the elements, and may even rot away over time. During the winter, a composite deck may experience some discoloration.

As technology and manufacturing processes improve, exposed wood and discoloration are becoming less and less of a problem; however, it is something to be aware of. You can head off a lot of these issues by carefully selecting a quality composite deck manufacturer.

Mold and Mildew Growth

Many homeowners who bought composite decking when it was relatively new were shocked to discover that after being exposed to winter rains, their decks showed signs of mold and mildew growth. Despite the protective plastic in these decking materials, the wood fibers are still susceptible to mold and mildew, particularly in moist weather conditions.

Many manufacturers now add mold inhibitors to the decking material to help prevent the growth of fungus. Additionally, the best defense against mold and mildew is regular cleaning. Keep your deck clear of leaves, dirt and other debris, which act as food for mildew. Make sure your deck boards have proper spacing to allow for air circulation, and remove any potted plants from your deck during the winter months, as water can pool beneath them and provide a breeding ground for mold and mildew.

If mold and mildew growth does occur, it's important to tackle the problem immediately to prevent any further staining or damage. In most cases, scrubbing with liquid dish soap will take care of the problem. If you use a deck cleaner, follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

Many professionals don't recommend power washing a composite deck, but if you choose to use one, it's crucial to take extra care not to damage your deck. Use a fan tip nozzle and spray with the grain pattern of the wood. Too much pressure is a bad thing for your decking material, so make sure not to go above the recommended maximum pressure of 1500 psi. Also, take the proper safety precautions when handling any type of equipment.

Snow Removal

When snow builds up around your home, the natural reaction of many homeowners is to haul out the snow shovel and get to work. However, shoveling is not the way to clear your composite deck of snow. Snow shovels can gouge the surface of your deck, causing permanent and unsightly damage.

Instead, try sweeping the snow off your deck. You can also use salt to melt the ice, but if you do, don't forget to rinse off the salt residue once the weather warms up.

Composite decking was created to solve many of the problems associated with wood decks, and it's become a highly successful and sought-after decking material. But it's important to keep in mind that "low maintenance" doesn't mean no maintenance, and the quality of decking varies between manufacturers. The best way to ensure you'll be satisfied with your composite deck is to do your research, choose a high-quality product and keep the surface of your deck clean throughout the winter.

Know About the Advantages of Composite Decks

These days' people are making a lot of new changes in their houses to make it look more appealing and magnificent. They are adding garden accessories, decks and patios to their homes to make the house look impressive and glamorous. A well decorated deck area can make a very good place for you to enjoy some special moments with your family and friends.

Compositing decking is becoming very popular these days because it has various benefits related to it. In this article my main focus would be to tell you about the numerous advantages of compositing decking over traditional decking methods.

1. Environment Friendly

The materials that are used in composite decking like recycled wood fibers and plastics are very environment friendly because there is no use of wood preservatives involved in the process of decking while using these materials. Sometimes even discarded shipping pallets and recycled milk jugs are used to make decks.

2. Easy to install

Decks which are made of composite materials are very easy to install. While installing them you need to keep in mind that composite decks need good drainage and airflow and you should also keep a large amount of space between two adjoining planks.

3. Resists heating and fading

One very great advantage of composite deck materials is that they resist heating and fading. The plastic in composite decks does not expand or contract with the change in weather as compared to wood decks. Composite decks are treated with UV stabilizer; preservatives and colorant that keep the colors uniform and prevents the deck from fading.

4. Low maintenance

These decks require a very low amount of maintenance because they do not easily split and are not harmed by insects. In composite decking you do not require staining, painting, weathering and sealing. The stains on the deck can easily be cleaned with a hose and composite deck cleaners.

5. Durability factor

It is often seen that although the initial cost of composite decking is higher that that of wood decks but in the long run such decks would be very beneficial for you. Composite decks are very durable that is why they remain in perfect condition for a longer period of time.

6. Do not sliver and splinter

Composite materials do not sliver or splinter that is why you can even walk on the deck barefoot. They are very safe, comfortable and absolutely slip resistant even when they are wet.

I am sure the above stated points would really help you to know about the various advantages of composite deck materials.

Composite Decking Has Many Advantages Over Traditional Wood Decks

What dreams do you have for improving your outdoor living space? Do you dream of an outdoor space to entertain? Are you unhappy with the look and upkeep of your existing deck? Do you just want a space to relax and enjoy your surroundings? Wood and composite decking are two of the most popular materials used in constructing outdoor decks.

Wood decking materials, such as pressure-treated lumber, are high maintenance products that need attention year after year to maintain a good appearance. Wood splits, splinters, becomes slippery when we, and heats up in the sun, which can make it unbearable to walk on. Exposed metal fasteners can lift from the wood causing injury. Eventually, you will have to replace it! Wood works well for substructures, but not for handrail and walking surfaces. Although wood is an inexpensive and quick solution for deck patio surfaces, it has a relatively short life.

Composite Deck materials can provide homeowners a beautiful wood look without wood's hassles. Look for composite decking materials created through a patented Purified Fiber Process (PFP) that eliminates the drastic color change associated with other composite decking materials.

Composite decking materials are also quick and easy to install, with self-spacing tongue and groove designs.

Designed for strength & durability, Composite Decking will not warp, rot, decay or check like wood, and is termite-resistant, assuring homeowners years of beauty, performance and value for their homes. Low- maintenance composite decking product never requires annual staining or sealing, and no special deck brighteners or chemicals are needed. So, you have more time to enjoy your deck patio instead of maintaining it. Simply use household cleaners and water from a garden hose to regain a clean appearance.

Choosing Between Wood Decks and Composite Decks

A composite deck is another popular option, as composite deck material provides an alternative to wood for those who want a more environmentally friendly option. Wood and composite decks are the top choices for decking materials.

Comparing Wood and Composite Decks

Wood is a natural material that is more or less susceptible to environmental factors such as weather, temperature, and rot. Wood decks can be protected from these elements through the application of sealers. Composite deck materials, being made from a combination of wood byproducts, plastics, and other materials. The added plastic component gives composite deck some characteristics that a conventional wooden deck does not possess. Composite decks are more resistant to rot, insects, weathering, cracking, and splitting than many wood decks.

Wood deck fans, however, argue that although wood decks are more susceptible to such types of damage, they can be refinished to their newly-installed state. Composite decking, when damaged, cannot be refinished; they must be replaced.

Choosing the Right Deck Material

Deck material is a matter of choice. Both wood decks and composite decks have their own sets of advantages and disadvantages, and it's up to the homeowner to see which deck material works best for his lifestyle. It also comes down to taste. Some may really prefer wood over any other material no matter the cost, and some may want to enjoy a deck that will not take ages to clean. Wood deck or composite deck, it is truly up to you. Either way, adding a deck to a property adds value of all kinds in extending a living space. The addition of a deck almost always improves the enjoyment of a property as a whole.

Backyard Decks and Patios - Deciding What You Really Want From Them

There aren't too many home owners around that would say they have no use for a backyard deck. Most people think of a patio or deck as a place to relax and have some fun with family and friends. The thing is a backyard deck is great, but if it doesn't fulfill your expectations then it is a useless space that will not be used very often. It then becomes something other than the fun you envisioned it to be and more of a headache then a place to relax.

Some homes are better suited for a patio than a deck, but each can serve the same purpose. You need to really think about what you want before you start building. It may be that the things you want out of your outdoor living space are not suited for what you were first going to build.

By asking yourself the right questions you'll very quickly know what you are going to need. You need to know how much you are willing to spend and how much work you are willing to put into it to maintain it. Generally speaking decks are the most affordable of the outdoor living spaces. Some require more work than others and you need to be aware of what each will entail. Some of the things you need to look into are weight capacity, for things like a hot tub a patio may be a better option for you.

You need to look into what type of weather you have. For example if you live in an area that has scorching hot sunshine you need to consider shading and other factors. Take a look at your property to see what would lend itself better to your situation. If you need to do landscaping to put in your patio you need to consider that it will take extra funds which have to be budgeted into the project. If you plan on building a deck you need to look into the different types of building supplies and decide what will work for you.

First you have composite and vinyl decking. There is no doubt that you will need a lot less maintenance with this type of material than a wooden deck as they tend to be resistant to the normal rot and insects associated with a wood deck. Most of these will stay true to form and have very little shrinkage or expansion, but some brands do have swelling in really hot weather. The cost of this type of a deck will run you up quite a bit compared to a wooden one.

Next you have the wooden deck. Pressure treated wood is the primary choice for wood decks due to it being resistant to rot and is quite affordable. You do need to understand that wood does give to the elements and whether you maintain it regularly or not it will give way eventually, though it will last much longer when maintained.

Spruce up your deck with some solar patio lights that you can pick up from Jo's outdoor deck lighting site for a real deal.

Where families get together just to enjoy your backyards and the outdoors. And it comes in so many different sizes, designs and forms that you can have whatever style fits you best.

Before even thinking about building backyard wood decks, you must figure out what kind of deck you want and need. Think about size and purpose, for example, because that will factor in the type of deck you will have. You might want to have a pool deck, a deck with a rooftop, or maybe a pergola. With all the varieties available, there can be so many things that you must consider. It will affect the construction's cost, and also the time it will take for your project to finish.

And they come in so many beautiful designs; you won't even know the difference. You will need to look at your space and how much you want to devote for your deck. This will probably give your contractor or yourself (if you are a DIY person) an idea of your deck size. If you have the budget, you can also get a consultant, which many companies may have their ideas for outdoor living spaces, and have them help you figure out what's best for you and your family.

Backyard wood decks are also much more environmentally friendly than the composite version. And it has a certain feel to it that makes it special and unique. It granted that new technology has afforded the same look, but you will certainly know that you have a genuine wooden deck. You can choose the type of lumber that you may want to use, remembering always to use a pre-treated wood that doesn't get ruined by the outdoor elements. These should be pressure treated so they will last longer and pine is probably the most used in this type of lumber.

Backyard wood decks allow you to use that part of your house that may be rarely seeing any activities because there's just no place to set up some tables or chairs. It will be like breathing new life to your backyard. No doubt, you'll have your neighbors admiring your backyard for a long time. Pool Decks - Something For Everyone

Here are some of the things you might want to consider when choosing a pool deck for your swimming pool.

Inclusive options: Probably the standard-bearer for convenience, safety and flexibility, inclusive pool decks (decks that come with the pool purchase) are cost-effective ways to have your pool ready the instant it is installed. Above-ground pools from Kayak Pools Midwest, for example, offer security fencing, swing-up safety ladders, no-slip surfaces and integrated deck designs that fit both your pool and your budget. What's more, advanced materials are virtually maintenance free.

Treated decking: Installing a treated deck--though more involved--is an option that allows additional customization. Much like your pool installation or any major addition to your home, installing a treated deck requires adherence to local building codes and design approval before beginning work; however a wide array of designs are possible with treated lumber that requires regular water seal maintenance.

Maintenance Free (composite) Decking: Though uniformly more expensive than inclusive decking or treated lumber, composite decking materials offer a maintenance-free alternative with the same customization options. That means, the material looks similar to wood, can be cut and fastened like wood, but is actually a weather-resistant material that eliminates the need to seal the deck structure.

Ultimately, your choice of pool decking comes down to personal choice and whether or not the added expense of a treated or composite deck is worth the investment above and beyond the inclusive option available with many swimming pools. Your swimming pool dealer can review inclusive options with you, and possibly recommend qualified companies to handle the installation of a treated or composite pool deck.

Decks and Patios - Descriptions and Ideas

The difference between a deck and patio is:

"In architecture, a deck is a flat surface capable of supporting weight, similar to a floor, but typically constructed outdoors, often elevated from the ground, and usually connected to a building." From Wikipedia

And, "A patio (from the Spanish: patio meaning 'back garden' or 'backyard') is an outdoor space generally used for dining or recreation that often adjoins a residence and is typically paved." From Wikipedia

Decks are the predominate outdoor living areas used on hillside locations. Some hillside homes have several levels of decks; a lower level structure to enter the home from, an mid-level structure off of the living area for outdoor living (sometimes known as a terrace) and upper level structures often used as an outdoor retreats off the bedrooms.

Sometimes a flat roof is used as an outdoor living area, especially in areas where you need to get up high to enjoy the view, like at the beach!

Usually the materials used to construct a deck are wood, or wood like, such as a composite or vinyl.

In multi-story buildings, decks are often used as walkways from one suite to another. Often in commercial applications, these structures are constructed of lightweight concrete.

Covered or not, a deck is a versatile structure that provides a level surface for convenient outdoor living in extreme elevations and tight spaces.

Patios are paved areas outside of a home or business, at ground level. Patios are often used for dining and recreation. Concrete, stone slabs, pavers and bricks are typical of the products used for this type of structure. The base is often formed of a compacted hard core (sometimes stone chips), then a layer of sand, and finally the construction material (sometimes set with mortar).

The firmness and stability of the base is essential to the sturdiness of the top layer of construction material. Patios that hold a lot of weight (such as a spa) require stronger foundations than those that are designed for light use (such as a dining area).

Of course if you are on a strict budget and are looking for and inexpensive way to establish a patio, you might consider a temporary structure. Just find a level area of ground, then, install an outdoor area rug, crushed stone or a 'Do It Yourself' plywood structure nailed to the ground, and painted with your favorite design.

Whatever your budget, decks or patios are outdoor living ideas that expand your living space. Whether we are dining, entertaining or just relaxing, most of us appreciate outdoor living spaces.

5 Reasons Decks Rot and Get Termites

Termites and wood rot often accompany each other because of lack of foresight on the builders part. If your contractor builds the deck first, and then stains or paints the deck, the damage has already been done! Experience with termites and wood rot has taught builders a much better approach to the age old problem.

Primer is used as an underlayment on any surface to be painted. Primer is meant to bond deep into the woods grain and allow other paints or stains to properly bond to the woods surface. If no primer is used, the paint or stain applied will not properly adhere to the woods surface. Redwood hates to be painted. Quite often, when the redwood gets to be about seven to ten years old the owner decides to paint it. Six months later, all the work has blistered and peeled off. Redwood has tannic acid in it's wood that specifically resists paint or stain. That is why paint stores offer a specific primer just for redwood. That termites do not eat redwood is a myth. They do! Add termite poison (Copper Sulfate) to the primer coat.

Prime and paint or stain all six sides of the the wood prior to construction. That way, once you have laid the boards down, they will have already been primed and painted, thus not allowing an access route for the termites or the water. If you have built the deck with virgin wood, and then paint it after it is done (like so many people and contractors do), it will lead to problems. Wood shrinks and settles over time. When it does, the wood that did not get painted is then exposed. The exposed woods allows the moisture to wick into the woods interior like a sponge, and gets trapped inside. Termites see the unpainted wood made soft by the water and attack. They like the water content in the wood.

Putting a gap in the wood to allow for proper drainage helps allow the wood to drain, but also allows it to breath. On a hot day, the breeze often can blow the cooler air trapped from under the deck up through the gaps in the decking and create a cool breeze.
Using treated wood near the ground is very important. If you can not afford the added expense of treated wood, you can treat the wood yourself. Douglass Fir is a hardwood, and is not too expensive. You can prime the wood used as sub structure plus add a good amount of termite poison into the primer coat. That will take a bite out of their appetite.
Use a raised footing. When a post is attached to the ground, it usually is set in concrete with a metal strap.Too often, the steel is set into the footing like planting a tree. The water puddles at the base of the post and rot begins. Use a 2"x 6" cut 1 foot x 1 foot and nail it into a square. Place that atop your footing and fill it with concrete. Place your steel strap in the center of the square. Once the concrete has dried, strip your form. Now the water can not rot the wood should a puddle be formed
Grade dirt below deck substructure to allow space between dirt and deck. (8"-12"). In some parts of the U.S. Subterranean termites bore up from underground so an air gap is encouraged.
Screw your decking boards down, dont use just nails. Screws keep it so much tighter, so that nothing can get through the gap because it is so tight. Statistics show that screwed decks last 50 % longer than decks attached with just nails.
Use only 100 % acrylic exterior paint or stain. Cheeper paints last half the time or less and in the long run are a waist of time and money. You want your paint or stain to decay over time so your deck wood does not.

Once your deck has been built properly, please do not be afraid to re-coat the deck's surface every 5 years to keep it looking nice for years to come, and unlike a composite, with a real deck, you can change the color as often as your wife tells you too!
