Types of Outdoor Decks

These days there are many types of decking materials available on the market. Purchasing a deck involves making some important decisions like choosing the material and selecting the overall size and appearance of the deck. People interested in designing a deck or having a deck built will be aware of the many kinds of decking material available to choose from. Decking may be an expensive outlay but it will add value and charm to a family home. When choosing decking products, you should look at the kind of decking components you prefer, you may want to also take into consideration how long that deck components will last for as well as the maintenance that the various different decking materials require. Deciding on the best material will help ensure the decking for your property is a good investment decision for the future. When choosing a deck there are many factors to consider, such as your budget, style of your home, style of your neighbors homes and outdoor areas. People in different areas will choose different types of decking due to the availability and cost of materials and the weather conditions.

Natural stone Decks

This is an option for individuals who want to construct a spectacular and classic patio. Stone decks look remarkable. The slabs are not as heavy as you may imagine, this is a very tough and durable material. In Australia stone decking is somewhat expensive and difficult to transport. People in Brisbane who want a stone patio would usually contact a paving company as opposed to a deck builder, and may work in conjunction with a builder to build the roof over the stone deck.

Preserved Soft Wood Decks

Decks created from pressure-treated pine can last for several years if the surface is properly cared for, but no matter how often a preserved pine deck is treated, pressure treated lumber can still warp. Wood obtained from older pine is less likely to bend and distort than wood taken from younger trees. Regardless of the age of the wood it can still warp, when exposed to extreme heat, rain and general weathering. Brisbane has a tropical climate with very warm and damp conditions throughout much of the year making wood decking increasingly less popular. Wood decking may not be suitable for Brisbane homes especially if the deck is to be uncovered.

Hard Wood Decks

Hard wood decking material is a fantastic option for those people who can afford the luxury this decking material gives. Hardwood still needs to be treated but is much more durable than pine and other soft woods. Hardwood is expensive and often imported due to deforestation restrictions.

Timber Hybrid Decks

Wood composite is often used for decking timber; this is a combination of wood fiber and plastic. This material is gaining in popularity as it is very durable and has a similar texture to real wood, the synthetic component makes this material really simple to clean and it will not absorb any moisture. It is an attractive material that should not warp or split. Despite the fact that timber composite decking is a lot more costly than pressure-treated wood, it's well worth the cost. Timber composite deck materials last longer than timber. Assuming wood composite decking material is something you can afford, it is an outstanding option for any outside area.

Vinyl Decks

The look and feel of vinyl is similar to wood. Vinyl decking is trouble free and easy to own, it can handle a lot of abuse and is a great choice for families with children. Vinyl deck material is easy to mop, and it's available in many textures and colours. People often choose Vinyl because it does not get hot to the touch under the sun, making this a particularly good choice for home owners in hot climates.

Different Types of Garden Decking

Installing decking in a garden or outdoor area is a brilliant way of transforming the look and function of your space. However, there are a number of varieties of decking to choose from (e.g. plastic, wood, composite) and there is sometimes confusion as to what the differences are. This article will look at the main types of decking and the benefits of each.

Hardwood decking is usually quite visually appealing and preferred because of the natural wood look. However, it can dry out in hot weather, so it does require oiling to prevent it from splintering. If you are looking for a particularly smooth finish you may need to have it professionally installed, as fitting the decking whilst keeping the fixings hidden can be a difficult task. Hardwood isn't necessarily the best solution for balconies as the natural sap within the wood leaches out and can discolour nearby bricks. This obviously isn't an issue if you are looking for a deck within the centre of a garden.

Composite decking is made of recycled hardwood and polymer resin. Unlike softwood, composite decking is low maintenance as it doesn't require annual cleaning. One major benefit of composite decking is that it can be moulded to meet almost any desired spatial conditions. Available in a variety of colours and finishes composite decking is ideal for any outdoor space regardless of size or shape. One disadvantage is that quality composite decking can be expensive, however it will add to the value of your home and some of the best decking companies will offer a 25 year guarantee so you know your decking is going to last.

Plastic decking isn't known for being particularly durable. It tends to expand and contract when the temperature changes and it has been known to creak and groan as it moves. Due to this movement plastic decking needs to be fixed to steel frames which can be very costly. If you are keen to help the environment it is possible to buy recycled plastic decking.

Lots of people opt for softwood decking because they want a natural wood appearance, however softwood decks have been known to become very slippery when wet. Even when the weather is dry algae and mould builds up creating a slimy slippery surface. Washing off the algae is a quick fix but by doing so, you make the timber more moisture-absorbent causing more algae to return. This type of decking needs annual cleaning and treating to keep it looking fresh.

There are lots of options if you are thinking about garden decking. The first thing you should do is consider the space and how much you can afford to spend. Decking varies in cost but you tend to get what you pay for in terms of quality. Decked areas can add to the value of your home so it is something to keep in mind when comparing the cost.

Composite decking is just one of the options available to you. Not all composite decking is the same and there are a number of suppliers to choose from. TimberTech UK is a company based in South Wales that supplies composite decking. Easy to install this decking requires minimal maintenance.

Types of Wood Decking That Will Last and Look Great

If you are putting in a new deck, here are few ideas for your wood decking. Soft wood is very durable than most woods of common use. It is resistant to wear and tear but relatively soft and will weather. When building a deck, preservative treating and sealing is highly recommended.

Again, Redwood will be available in grades which will vary with consideration and appearance as well as quality. Color on wood will very from a lightly toned red to a dark red brown shade as well. The grades in wood decking are as follows: Clear Heart, B-Grade, Construction Heart, and Construction Common.

Having this said, patios hold a lot of weight, as well as driveways. They both require very strong foundations. These require stronger foundations than the ones designed for a light use. As wear and tear decays the wood can take time as they are protected with strong basics such as well wood decking constructions.

Paying close attention of the wood decking design will prevent any damage as time takes the best part of wood. Patio awnings are part of a home and building design. These not only serve a purpose but they also add a signature to your home and make a statement as well.

Being a great idea to build a wood deck, teak is a very impressive wood which is used in the manufacturing of patio furniture on natural water and insect resistant decks without any chemical treating to protect the wood from decay as well as termites. Take advantage of the fun you will have on building your own deck with wood decking.

Susan is still looking for the perfect wood decking to match her new brazilian teak flooring.

The Five Basic Types of Outdoor Decks - And How to Choose the Best One for You

When you're ready to begin building a new deck, the first thing to ask yourself is what you want that deck to accomplish. Decks can bring your family years of enjoyment, and add value and beauty to your home, but it's rarely a good idea to simply build a deck without a plan in mind, simply for the sake of having a deck on your property. Sure, there are other issues to address - like, what kind of decking material you'll use (whether wood or composite decking), what kinds of plans you'll use, and how you'll fit your new deck (or decks - who knows, right?) in with local zoning regulations. But for right now, it's OK to fantasize about exactly what kind of deck will beautify your home.

So, without further ado, here are The Five Major Types of Outdoor Decks:

Porch Decks. Yeah, that's right - porches are decks. If you'd like to step out of your front door onto a deck that winds its way around to the back door, you might be looking for a porch. These types of decks are best for rural homes, or houses with a lot of land around them. Porch decks give any home a classic Little House on the Prairie feel - only without the horses and lack of indoor heating.

Barbecue Decks. Looking for a place where you can grill steaks without feeling trapped in the kitchen? Barbecue decks have become more popular with the recent grilling renaissance that's swept through American suburbs like a warm front in June. Real wood decking, or some of the woodier-looking composite decking materials, are best for barbecue decks, where you'll undoubtedly want to keep the rustic, outdoorsy tone that comes with these types of decking.

Pool Decks. Well, maybe you don't have a pool yet. But if you get a pool, well, you've pretty much got to build a deck around it, right? (Use this reasoning if your family resists your argument that decks add value and beauty to homes.) Pool decks should be easy on bare feet, so decking with a smooth, satiny surface is your best bet for these kinds of decks. Some decking manufacturers make composite materials specifically designed to be easy on bare feet.

Second-Story Decks. Where is it written that decks can only extend from the ground floor? Nowhere, that's where! Second-story decks are great for parties, and if built right, can double as carports. These are especially attractive in rural mountain homes, where they'll blend well with a hilly landscape.

Free-Standing Decks. As decks go, these are probably the easiest to build, since you don't have to remove siding, attach the decking to your home, or otherwise risk damage to the house itself during construction. Of course, these decks will need structural support on all sides, so it's best to plan carefully.

So there they are: The Five Major Types of Outdoor Decks. But listen close and we'll tell you a secret: There are more than five. The number is limited only by your imagination, carpentry skills, and budget. Try combining ideas from the above list: Maybe you can extend a second-story deck to surround your above-ground pool. Decks can be a wonderful outlet for your creativity, so don't stop at these five. See what you can come up with on your own.

Good luck, and happy decking.

Types of Decking Material

Wood

Wood decks are the most traditional type of deck that you will find. Wood gives you unlimited design options and can be painted or stained to match your home. Because of its exposure to moisture, most wood used for decks is pressure-treated which helps prevent decay and termite damage. Wood decks require yearly maintenance.

Composite

Composite decking consists of synthetic plastic and real wood fiber. This combination makes for a very strong and durable decking material with the look of natural wood but without the maintenance. Composite decking does not splinter, and lasts a long time. Combining the desire for low maintenance with an environmental consciousness, homeowners are particularly turning to composite decking due to their high level of recycled content.

Vinyl

Vinyl decks are affordable, durable and long lasting. These decks come in almost any color and do not need to be stained or painted. Although they are not natural wood, they can be made to mimic it. Vinyl decks are safe because of their slip-resistant finish in the rain and resistance to heat build-up during warm weather. They are splinter-free and very low maintenance.

If you want your deck to last, it is important to choose a material and finish that you can successfully maintain. Decks are subject to all weather elements, such as sun, snow, ice, and wind. Maintaining your deck is key to keeping its appearance in top shape. After spending time and money on your new deck, maintaining it properly will make it all worthwhile.

The 3 Main Types of Deck Material

Traditionally, deck material has been wood. Depending on what part of the country lived in, that might be redwood, western cedar or pressure-treated southern pine.

Other types of wood material are also becoming more available: Alaska yellow cedar and rain-forest hardwoods such as ipe and red meranti from Malaysia.

In addition, two new categories of deck material have appeared in recent years: composites made from natural wood fiber and recycled plastic and decking made from extruded vinyl.

A growing public sensitivity regarding hazardous chemicals has created the situation in which consumers have become increasingly receptive to environmentally advanced products. In the past southern pine was treated with chromated arsenate (CCA). However, a new process has substituted alkaline cooper quad (ACQ) as the preservative to create pressure-treated deck material.

It continues to effectively fight rot, decay and insect attack. At the same time it's easy to use in any outdoor application and can be stained, painted or left to weather. Scraps of this wood can be disposed of by regular trash collection. More importantly, it is one of the least expensive deck materials.

Top grades of redwood are prized as deck material for their performance. Redwood is very stable and is naturally resistant to both rot and insects. It is easy to work and holds finishes well. The application of a protective finish every few years that contains mildewcides, water repellents and UV protections is a wise choice.

Western red cedar and Alaska yellow cedar are both resistant to decay, straight grained, easy to work and dimensionally stable. Western red cedar deck material has a red to brown color and is lighter in weight than Alaskan cedar or redwood. Yellow cedar is stronger and heavier and has a clear, bright color. It is more difficult to stain because of its density.

Tropical hardwoods can make great deck materials. Ipe, a related group of South American hardwoods, is highly resistant to rot and insect damage. It makes an extremely durable deck surface. Ipe is a premium decking product in terms of price. However, it has been exploited for years and is becoming an endangered species.

Meranti is a deck material from Malaysia, the Philippines and parts of Southeast Asia. It is also called Philippine mahogany or lauan. It is rated as being a step below redwood, cedar and ipe.

Composite deck material made from recycled plastic and ground-up waste wood is too flexible to be used for structural or load-bearing framing. Instead it is used mainly as decking. Other than periodic cleaning, composite deck material does not need any maintenance.

Vinyl deck materials are extruded from solid polyvinyl chloride (PVC). They are splinter free, inedible to insects, fungi and maintenance free and resistant to mildew and UV damage.

In the end, the choice of which deck material will be used comes down to a matter of money and availability. The ideal deck would have its framework and support posts made using pressure-treated wood. The deck surface, fascia, railing and step systems would be constructed using the best deck materials that the homeowner could afford to buy.
