Insider Tips For Buying a Skateboard Deck

One of the most important decisions you can make when building your skateboard is the deck. The deck not only supports all of your weight, but allows you to maneuver the board and do tricks. But for whatever reasons, many skateboarders don't pay much attention to buying the correct deck for their skating style.

This can not only be dangerous, but it affects your ability to skate your best. You should always be aware of what deck size is perfectly suited for your skating style and size. To help you make a more informed decision the next time you stroll into your local shop, here are a few deck buying tips.

The common deck width is around 8 inches and is perfectly suited for skaters who like to do such tricks as flips and grinds. The length of the average desk is usually between 32-34 inches. While the length isn't usually a big factor for most skateboarders, the width usually is.

Depending on your size and weight, you may want a narrow board or wide board. A general rule is that the bigger you are, the wider your deck should be. Of course this can be a personal preference, but I wouldn't recommend that any big guys use a narrow deck for safety reasons.

The best decks are made out of Canadian maple wood, but you can also buy high quality decks in other woods and materials such as kevlar and carbon fibers. Many decks made out of composite material are generally lighter than their wood counterparts. Basically, you want to make sure your deck is made out of a good and durable wood that will last and won't crack easily.

You also must take into account the nose of the board as well. Generally the more curve a nose has, the easier it will be to do tricks on. If you are more into street cruising, then a flat nose will be more than suitable.

Skateboard decks come in a variety of shapes and sizes and selecting the perfect one can be a confusing process. However, by using some of the tips I detailed above, it will make buying a great deck extremely simple.

Skateboard Decks

The deck is an important component of a skateboard. Simply put, the deck is a piece of wood or a wooden board the rider stands on. A skateboard comprises four wheels attached to two axles. The axles are known as trucks, and are mounted to the bottom of a wooden board called a deck. Usually, the decks are about 79 cm long and 20 cm wide. They are made of seven layers of Canadian maple veneer, which are pressed and glued together.

Skateboard makers alternate the direction of the wood grain of each layer so that the deck does not split along the natural grain lines of the wood. Metallic decks or decks made of composite materials are rather rare. For downhill riding and street riding you should use longer skateboards, while the shorter ones are more suitable for tricks and maneuvers.

A main feature of a deck is that it rises at both ends. The one in the front is called the nose, while the rear one known as the tail. To perform tricks and stunts, skateboarders use the leverage from the kicked ends. The deck usually has abrasive grip tape on top, providing traction that prevents the rider from slipping off.

For a rider, it is very important that he gets the right deck size while choosing the board. It should neither be too small nor too big. In case the deck is too small, you will find it tough to maintain balance, as your feet and heels will hang over the edge. Again, if it is too big, you will face difficulties in turning and lifting off the ground while trying tricks. If the deck is more concave, the skateboarder can display his/her tricks more aggressively.

There are many patterns and designs you can get on your deck. So choose a deck you find beautiful, and if you want to give it a personal touch add some stickers on it.

Skateboard Deck Materials

The skateboard deck is the actual board of the skateboard. Although you may think a skateboard is simply a piece of wood with axles and wheels attached underneath, this is not the case. While the deck is usually made of plywood, today there are many choices of skateboard deck materials. Most beginners are fine with plywood, but as you get more involved in skateboarding, you may want to upgrade your deck to one of the following types.

Composites, aluminum, nylon, fiberglass, resin, Kevlar, Plexiglas, and other artificial materials are being experimented with to increase the rigidity of the skateboard deck. The main issue that many have found with these designs is that the deck requires some flexibility to perform tricks and other maneuvers. Also, these materials can make decks too heavy to use. Some experimental designs use artificial materials to form a honeycomb design inside a wooden exterior. Inexpensive decks may be made simply of plastic.

Even if you opt for a simple plywood deck, you still have several options. Most plywood decks are made of maple, laminated together with glue. The grain of each wood layer is laid in an alternating direction, so that the deck cannot split along the natural grain of the wood. The main difference here is between 7-ply board and 9-ply boards. 7-ply have seven thin sheets of wood laminated together, while 9-ply have nine sheets. The 9-ply decks are thicker and heavier, which can make it more difficult to manipulate the board.

Most skateboard decks measure about 32 inches long and 8 inches wide, and are roughly rectangular or oval in shape. Longer boards are better for downhill or street riding, as well as transportation, while shorter ones make it easier to use skateboard parks and perform tricks. However, the length of the board is not nearly as important as the width.

If you are very tall, choose a wider deck, as it can help you feel proportionate while riding the board. On the other hand, a wider deck will also give beginners stability as they learn to balance on the skateboard. The dimensions of the board may vary depending on intended use, so decide whether you want to use your board mainly on streets, in skate parks and bowls, or as transportation. A deck that is too skinny will be hard to use because your feet may hand over the edge of the board, reducing your stability. On the other hand, a larger deck may be too difficult to control during tricks.

After the laminated boards are shaped into a skateboard, holes for the truck mount are drilled, and the board is coated with paint or sealant. Grip tape may then be placed on the top of the deck, although some manufacturers leave this step for the user. Most decks also include a large logo of the manufacturer.

Decks also differ in their angles depending on the intended use. Decks are not straight across and flat. All decks rise slightly at both ends. The amount of curvature and the shape of the front and back are designed specifically for different uses; a bigger curve will give more leverage, making it easier to perform more tricks.
