The Other Decking Materials

Decks made of wooden material require constant care. Rotting wood requires constant replacement. Stains need to be re-applied every three to five years. The deck must be checked and treated periodically to keep it free from mildew, mold, and pests. Whether you find the maintenance of wooden decks too costly, are looking for a greener alternative, or just want something unique to make your deck stand out from the neighbors', there are already a few substitutes that are making their way into suburban houses.

Aluminum

Our first low maintenance deck material is aluminum. This material can look like a wood product and can be fixed with the same tools that are typically used for wood. An aluminum deck is lighter but stronger than wood and has a deck temperature that is cooler than wood and cement. This deck is great for rainy weather as it is slip-proof, watertight, and built with its own drainage system. However, an aluminum deck is expensive, not yet found in most home improvement stores, and limited to a few design choices.

Composite

The greenest deck material, a composite deck is a combination of wood fiber and sawdust mixed with PVC or polyethylene. Its grain is exactly like wood except it won't split, scrape, or warp. It is an animal and child-friendly deck since it doesn't have any sharp edges or visible nails to cause harm. A composite deck tends to sag, though, and requires strong support beams underneath. It is also more expensive than wood decks and can fade over time without giving you an option to paint or sand over it.

Vinyl

The only maintenance needed for vinyl decks is an occasional sweep during dusty days or mop ups during muddy days. It is easy to install and can withstand all types of weather. A vinyl deck's color is consistent from all angles and won't fade, making any painting, sealing, or staining treatments moot. As a deck, vinyl is pretty sturdy and won't peel, fracture, or break apart. The only drawbacks with a vinyl deck are its cost factor and artificial appearance.

To sum up, going for a green alternative to the wood deck is an expensive choice. In the long run, however, the lack of maintenance with these substitutes saves not just money, but time and effort. Make sure to pick one that is consistent to the style of the rest of the house and one that you would be happiest with. In the end, the comfort and satisfaction you and your family feel upon looking at your finished deck is the only thing that matters.
