Cost of Building a Deck

Although it doesn't have the same impact as putting an addition on, a deck has its own unique value. A deck will usually add to the value of your home without costing as much as adding on an extra room to your home. It doesn't take very long to get a deck constructed either. It can be as short as 2 weeks or even less if the contractor has a large crew.

The cost of building a deck will depend on a large group of factors. The physical makeup of the deck and optional features you may want to add, all have an impact on the cost. You will also need to have the construction of your deck meet local building specifications. The contractor should be able to fill you in on the specific requirements. Assuming you are paying someone else to install your deck, you will undoubtedly have to spend a minimum of $3500. This would be for a very small deck with the bare minimum railing and stairs.

The cost of a deck depends on:

Size: You can install anything from a simple 10x12 deck to decking that covers most of your yard. Decks can be constructed with small nodules where hot tubs and grills can be permanently located. Obviously, a large deck requires more labor and materials and so the cost will be more.

Material: Your deck can be made from cheap wood, expensive wood, pressure treated wood, composite materials, and PVC decking. The more expensive materials will last the longest and require the least amount of upkeep.

Railings: The railing of a deck can be a different material from the deck and can be used to add quite a bit of cosmetic appeal. The cost of the railings will hinge on the material and complexity of the design you want.

The Extras: The options can greatly affect the price but it is often worth investing in. Some options don't need to be implemented during the construction stage. Sometimes people spread out the cost of the deck by investing in different stages. For instance, wait another year to add a roof or awning. The important thing to keep in mind is you should mention your future plans to the contractor. This may affect the way he builds the deck. Another option that is popular is the addition of electrical outlets and outdoor lighting. This is another feature that doesn't need to be done the same year as building the deck.

Contractors are willing to give you a free estimate so be sure you compare at least 3 proposals for building your deck.
