Many of the cleaners are extremely hazardous and only clean the surface leaving the cause untouched.

Wood composites are not structural components. Most manufactures suggest 12"OC or less for joists because composite wood will sag under it's own weight. Also, some of the new lines with hollow cores are easily punctured with high heels or patio furniture. Furthermore, composites expand and contract a greatly with temperature changes, causing loosening of fasteners & boards.

Environmentally, composites just don't cut it. Yes, they are made from post consumer waste, however they quickly become consumer waste that cannot be recycled or reused. They are associated with many health concerns both in construction and VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions such as formaldehyde and other toxins linked to cancers, skin diseases and even respiratory problems.

Several lawsuits have been filed and a few settled with composite manufacturers. With big advertising budgets many people are lured to believe composite decking is a great choice. However, with minimal research one could spend days reading complaint after complaint on these products. Numerous composite manufacturing companies have shut down under one name only to reopen under another avoiding warranty issues. Composite woods are definitely a buyer beware product and not even close to 'no maintenance' and 'lifetime warranty'.

Composite Decking Vs Pressure Treated Wood Decking

Composite decking claims a 25 year fade warranty. That sounds great, right? Well after the initial install you will not notice the fading that is really taking place. It is a very slow process. How ever, if you have the need to replace one or more of the topping boards a year latter, you will see the drastic change in color fade. There is a positive side to this however. In time, the new boards will also fade into the same color as the original boards. So if you can bare to live with the different colors for some time than its all good for you. If you think the difference would bother you, then you may want to do some more research on composite decking before you purchase.

Reasons why you may need to change composite topping after installed-

Composite topping boards are not scratch proof. Let me repeat this, composite topping boards are not scratch proof. Although they are very durable, they are not by any means scratch proof. And if a scratch happens, it can not be removed by sanding are any other means. You will either have to live with it or replace the board and deal with the color difference until it fades to match.

The good side to composite decking-

If you can live those downfalls, the upside to having a composite deck is the life span of the material. The composite decking will not rot. You will never have to paint it, stain it, or seal it. So once it has been installed it becomes virtually maintenance free. And that is were the down fall to pressure treated wood comes into play.

Pressure treated wood decking warranty-

Most pressure treated wood manufacturers will have between a 15 to 25 year warranty on their product. This warranties only if you maintain proper maintenance for the life of the product. Yes that means you will need to power wash the decking at least once every 3 years and seal it with a good sealer. It is extremely important to do this or the decking will dry out, crack, and rot.

The up side to having an pressure treated wood deck-

Although you will have to keep up maintenance on it, the natural wood deck has the best appearance to it. You can use a semi translucent sealer to leave the natural wood grain exposed or you can use a solid stain to color it to match just about any color you may need. If a board gets damaged by a scratch it can be sanded and sealed again to match. If need be that more than one board needs to be replaced, they can also be sealed to match in color.

My opinion:

Well, in all of my years of installing decks, I have to say I like the wood decks better. They just look like they are real. I feel that the composite decks are very rich looking and elegant, and practical as far as maintenance goes. So it really is just a matter of what type of house do you have, what look you are going for, do you have time for maintenance, and maybe even what area you live in.

Decking Lumber - Alternatives to Pressure Treated Wood Which Are Naturally Insect Resistant


In the not so distant past, decking did not enjoy the longevity it does today. Advancements in deck sealants, stains, and pressure treating wood have greatly enhanced the durability and appearance of the modern day deck. Proper annual or seasonal maintenance is still required to ensure a quality deck retains its quality over time. Choosing a better species of wood is the first place to start. A "better" species of wood is one which is more resilient to the harsh elements. There are only a few areas which do not receive a vast variety of temperature or climate changes. The majority of the U.S. is much like what North Carolina experiences year round. Temperatures ranging from freezing to hot can cause repeated and rapid contraction and expansion of deck lumber. Coupled with wet or icy conditions, most basic lumber, regardless of being pressure treated, will begin to show signs of age. What determines how quickly the custom deck will wear is the type of wood used.

The most commonly used types of decking lumber are pine, fir, cypress, and cedar. There are many more choices such as mahogany, redwood, and exotic lumbers. The more inexpensive of these types are pine, fir, and cypress. Regional location is factored into lumber pricing. For example, redwood should be less expensive in the western U.S. than it would in New England.

Pressure treated pine decking, or PT lumber, can be found in almost every hardware store or home improvement store. In years past, pressure treated lumber was commonly treated with chromated copper arsenate, or CCA. Unfortunately, this widely used type of treating was proven to be carcinogenic and very toxic due to arsenate leaching into groundwater, plants, and skin through repeated prolonged exposure.

It was quite common for many parks and playground equipment to use CCA pressure treated lumber. Most cities and towns have now replaced these poisonous structures with metal or synthetic equipment. Because of this danger, most larger home improvement store chains have now switched from stocking CCA treated wood to a more benign type of pressure treated wood. Fantastic alternatives to using pressure treated lumber are naturally resistant woods such as cedar, cypress, and high-grade redwood.

Again, every home owner needs to be aware of any pressure treated lumber used on their property, especially if gardening is being used to provide fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Once the soil is contaminated with CCA treated lumber, it should never be used again for the growing of foods. If the existing deck or structure is not known to be CCA free, the home owner needs to assume that the ground has been contaminated. The deck builder which installed the deck should have this information readily available, if not voluntarily informing the customer.

A newer alternative to wood is synthetic lumber or composite lumber. These alternatives use recycled lumber combined with epoxies and resins to form lumber substitutes. Synthetic lumber is considered a green and ecologically responsible alternative to deforestation. It can often be difficult to differentiate synthetic lumber from the genuine article once it has been installed. Lumber for Decking - Certain Species of Wood Are Better For Decks Than Others, Even Pressure Treated


There are a wide variety of decking materials available on the market today. Some will require more care and maintenance unlike synthetic or composite decking, but traditionalists still insist that the beauty of natural wood can not be matched by man made materials. Out of the several different species of wood used for decks some are more durable than others. Each, however, has their own advantages.

The most commonly utilized types of lumber for decking have been southern yellow pine and cedar for reasons of affordable pricing and the ease in which to find at home improvement centers. Most, if not all of the decking lumber stocked by these home improvement stores, has been pressure treated in order to increase the resistance to rot from rain and insect damage. Because the chemical used in pressure treating lumber does not completely penetrate through the entire piece of lumber, when the cut wood is exposed it should be treated. These types of wood, as most, when used for outside landscape projects, need to be treated annually with a sealant in order to maintain a beautiful and long lasting finish.

Chromium Copper Arsenate (CCA) was the chemical solution used to pressure treat wood. Due to serious health risks connected with arsenic, this chemical has been discontinued in the general consumer market. The alternatives, such as Alkaline Copper Quaternary (ACQ) and others, contain a much higher copper content which will accelerate the corrosion of nails or screws. For this reason special coated screws or deck fasteners need to be used.

Cypress, which grows in swamp-like conditions, is more common in the eastern half of the United States and is also a reasonably affordable type of lumber used for decking. Cypress is naturally very rot resistant. Trees and logs which have been submerged in swamps for decades have been raised and yielded perfectly decent wood. Because of this natural durability to wet conditions, cypress decking can outlast any other wood decking by decades even if left untreated.

Redwood is also a regional type of lumber common to the western U.S. One may still special order redwood lumber for building a deck; however, the cost of redwood lumber will be above what the average home owner is either willing or able to pay. One aspect of redwood, similar to cypress, is that it is also rot resistant.

Despite a large variety of species available for use, not all are considered "green" or easily sustainable. Both Cypress and Redwood are quickly becoming scarce. Imported woods from South America and Australia are available, but at premium prices and only when special ordered. The deck contractor should have all of the answers to any question regarding the selection of a type of lumber for a deck.

Pressure Treated Lumber For Decks - Alternatives to Chemically Processed Lumber Which May Be Better


The pressure treating process of lumber was invented approximately 70 years ago. ?Up until 2004, the main method for pressure treating lumber was with chromated copper arsenate. ?The main problem realized with CCA treated wood is that arsenic was discovered to leach out from this pressure treated lumber. ?Unfortunately this meant that almost every deck, gazebo, pergola and playground was exposing families to the highly toxic arsenic.

Many proponents and individuals working in the lumber industry have categorically denied that CCA lumber is environmentally safe. ?Claims have also been made that no one has been harmed or experienced any ill effects from CCA treated lumber. ?Fortunately, independent testing and medical records has shown otherwise. ?While the leaching out of toxins can be minimal, major negative health problems have been much higher when CCA lumber has been burned or exposure to sawdust from cutting the pressure treated lumber. ?

While the levels of arsenic which people were exposed to varied, the production of this type of chemical pressure treating was banned in the U.S. and parts of Europe in all residential and general use lumber as of 2004. ?Despite being banned, some old stock can turn up in stores. ?Even though CCA lumber was banned, it is still being produced in some products. ?The exceptions allowed are poles, marine lumber, piles and guard rails.

There are alternatives to using this older pressure treated lumber which have been created. ?ACQ, or Alkaline Copper Quat, is the most prevalent and easily found in home improvement stores for general use carpentry. ?There is a marginal increase in cost of this newer pressure treated lumber, but it does not have the same health risks associated with CCA.

No matter what type of chemical is used to treat the wood, eventually is will begin to break down from exposure to the elements. ?Another alternative to using wood as decking and playground equipment is synthetic lumber. ?One may also hear synthetic lumber go by the term composition decking. ?

Originally, synthetic lumber looked like it was synthetic. ?The quality and appearance of many different brands of synthetic decking are virtually indistinguishable from real wood today. ?Synthetic lumber has different formulas, but are essentially composed of resins, plastics and recycled material. ?The greatest advantage of utilizing synthetic decking lumber is that it is largely impervious to rot and damage from insects. ?The increased durability will also be accompanied by an increase in cost as opposed to using basic pressure treated deck boards.

Composite Decking Vs Pressure Treated Wood Decking

Composite decking claims a 25 year fade warranty. That sounds great, right? Well after the initial install you will not notice the fading that is really taking place. It is a very slow process. How ever, if you have the need to replace one or more of the topping boards a year latter, you will see the drastic change in color fade. There is a positive side to this however. In time, the new boards will also fade into the same color as the original boards. So if you can bare to live with the different colors for some time than its all good for you. If you think the difference would bother you, then you may want to do some more research on composite decking before you purchase.

Reasons why you may need to change composite topping after installed-

Composite topping boards are not scratch proof. Let me repeat this, composite topping boards are not scratch proof. Although they are very durable, they are not by any means scratch proof. And if a scratch happens, it can not be removed by sanding are any other means. You will either have to live with it or replace the board and deal with the color difference until it fades to match.

The good side to composite decking-

If you can live those downfalls, the upside to having a composite deck is the life span of the material. The composite decking will not rot. You will never have to paint it, stain it, or seal it. So once it has been installed it becomes virtually maintenance free. And that is were the down fall to pressure treated wood comes into play.

Pressure treated wood decking warranty-

Most pressure treated wood manufacturers will have between a 15 to 25 year warranty on their product. This warranties only if you maintain proper maintenance for the life of the product. Yes that means you will need to power wash the decking at least once every 3 years and seal it with a good sealer. It is extremely important to do this or the decking will dry out, crack, and rot.

The up side to having an pressure treated wood deck-

Although you will have to keep up maintenance on it, the natural wood deck has the best appearance to it. You can use a semi translucent sealer to leave the natural wood grain exposed or you can use a solid stain to color it to match just about any color you may need. If a board gets damaged by a scratch it can be sanded and sealed again to match. If need be that more than one board needs to be replaced, they can also be sealed to match in color.

My opinion:

Well, in all of my years of installing decks, I have to say I like the wood decks better. They just look like they are real. I feel that the composite decks are very rich looking and elegant, and practical as far as maintenance goes. So it really is just a matter of what type of house do you have, what look you are going for, do you have time for maintenance, and maybe even what area you live in.
